Specific Accountabilities:
Technical Duties
a) Develop and lead biochemistry or chemistry research projects from proposal development to project completion;
b) Mentor students on applied research activities and assign work and supervise the students;
c) Conduct research activities including literature review, data analysis, and experimentation in collaboration with researchers and industry partners in the area of water, bio-process and materials;
d) Lead laboratory analysis and design of experiments for research projects: •design •implementation •installation •calibration •documentation;
e) Provide consultancy support to partners, industry representatives for development of new projects;
f) Prepare technical reports and presentation for research partners;
g) Work with researchers to design and develop work plans and coordinate timelines for project completion;
h) Set –up and attend meetings with research teams and industry partners to update activities;
i) Selection, installation and implementation of various laboratory equipment and installation;
j) Maintain instrumentation equipment in lab in terms of regular maintenance repairs: •Scheduling regular maintenance •Keeping usage logs for equipment
k) Keeping up with overall lab maintenance consumables: •Ordering auxiliary equipment •Gas and liquid ordering •General lab materials, gloves, glasses etc.
l) Ensure that the projects comply with health and safety regulations, College policies, WHMIS, and chemical storage and handling;
m) Ensure that quality standards are maintained
Safety Coordination
a) Develop content and lead monthly department wide safety meetings.
b) Review all existing safety policies and make improvements as required.
c) Review all new chemicals and develop safety procedures for proper handling, storage and disposal for each.
d) Responsible for implementing safety training of all new students and personnel that work in the labs.
e) Oversee waste disposal and coordinate pickup.
f) Other safety focused tasks as needed
Administration Duties
a) Work with the Applied Research and Innovation Office to prepare purchase orders;
b) Liaising with research partners, suppliers, contractors, and relevant authorities for purchasing as well as executing required tasks;
c) Work with Applied Research and Innovation Office for project management within cost and time constrained environments;
d) Develop task lists for research students;
e) Support with Applied Research Outreach Manager to prepare content for promotional literature such as website content, brochures or flyers and coordinates printing and distribution;
f) Help with tours to future partners, major contributors and guests
About the Position:
This is a temporary, full time support staff position replacing a bargaining unit employee. This position will start as soon as possible and end September 5, 2026. Working 35 hours per week at an hourly rate of $42.56 reporting to the Manager, BPRC.
Working closely with Faculty Research Leads and Research Centre Coordinators, the candidate is responsible as the primary investigator on research projects focused on chemistry and biochemistry in collaboration with research technicians, research students, industry partners and Applied Research and Innovation Office staff.
The incumbent’s duties will be leading collaborative research projects, designing experiments, maintaining sophisticated research equipment and contract research testing. Proposal applications and related reporting are a key responsibility in this position.
Qualifications:
- 4 year degree Biochemistry related field with safety training a major asset
- Minimum of 2 years experience with JOHSC, and safety programs for labs
- Minimum of 2 years experience with Proposal and Grant Applications
- Minimum of 2 years experience conducting and leading academic/industry research projects in biochemistry related projects
- Minimum of 2 years experience with Safety Officer training
- Experience with laboratory analytical instruments.
- Familiar with laboratory experiments and procedures
- Strong knowledge of Microsoft office
- Strong commitment to overall health and safety
- Well-developed analytical, problem-solving and evaluation skills required to troubleshoot, problem-solve and provide analytical solutions to a wide variety of situations.
