#####Job Overview

Reporting to theChief Financial Officer (CFO), the Assistant Controller supports the financial management and reporting functions of the Club while ensuring strong internal controls, accurate accounting processes, and effective financial planning.

This role plays an important leadership function within the Finance team by overseeing core accounting operations including the general ledger, accounts payable and receivable, financial reporting, and budgeting processes. The Assistant Controller partners with leadership across the Club to provide financial analysis, support operational planning, and help ensure the organization’s financial integrity and long-term sustainability.

Compensation:$85,000 – $115,000 annually, commensurate with experience and qualifications.

The following outlines the primary responsibilities of this role, including but not limited to:

  • Maintain the integrity and accuracy of the Club’s general ledger and financial records, including oversight of sub-ledgers such as accounts payable, accounts receivable, payroll, inventory, and fixed assets.
  • Lead the monthly financial close process and prepare accurate financial statements in accordance with applicable accounting standards, including not-for-profit accounting principles.
  • Prepare and present financial reports and variance analysis, including analysis of cost of goods sold, margins, overhead expenses, and operational performance.
  • Partner with departmental leaders to review monthly profit and loss statements and provide financial insights that support operational decision-making.
  • Support the development of annual operating and capital budgets, as well as quarterly forecasts and financial planning initiatives.
  • Oversee the Accounts Payable and Accounts Receivable functions, ensuring accurate member billing, vendor payments, and timely processing of financial transactions.
  • Maintain and strengthen internal financial controls, including approval workflows, spending controls, and vendor management processes.
  • Ensure compliance with the Club’s financial policies, governance framework, and applicable accounting standards, while supporting financial audits and reviews.
  • Work closely with the CFO and COO to translate financial data into meaningful insights that support strategic initiatives and operational planning.
  • Support the preparation of financial reports and presentations for executive leadership, the Finance Committee, and the Board of Directors.
  • Oversee financial systems and reporting tools, including Jonas Club Software and Excel-based reporting, while identifying opportunities to improve automation and reporting efficiency.
  • Provide leadership, coaching, and mentorship to accounting team members while fostering a collaborative and high-performing finance team environment.
  • Support financial process improvements and cross-functional initiatives that strengthen financial reporting, operational efficiency, and data integrity.
  • Maintain confidentiality of financial information and uphold the highest standards of professional integrity.

#####Qualifications

  • CPA designation (CPA-CA preferred).

  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field.

  • Minimum 5 years of progressive accounting or financial management experience related to the responsibilities outlined above.

  • Strong understanding of Canadian accounting standards, financial regulations, and tax compliance requirements.

  • Demonstrated knowledge of GAAP and Not-for-Profit Accounting Standards (ASNPO).

  • Experience with financial reporting, budgeting, forecasting, and financial analysis.

  • Proficiency in financial systems and reporting tools, including Excel and accounting software such as Jonas Club Software or similar platforms.

  • Strong analytical, problem-solving, and financial modelling skills.

  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills with the ability to translate complex financial information into clear insights.

  • Highly detail-oriented and organized with strong time management and prioritization abilities.

  • Ability to work collaboratively with senior leadership and departmental managers to support organizational decision-making.

  • Demonstrated leadership capabilities with experience coaching or supervising finance or accounting staff.
