R&D Food Scientist (15 month contract)

**Contract:**15 months
Role is onsite Monday-Friday day shift, with the flexibility to support business on off shifts as needed.
JOB SUMMARY
The Bakery R&D Food Scientist plays a critical role in developing, improving, and optimizing bakery products to meet customer specifications, enhance product quality, and ensure production feasibility. The role combines food science, culinary creativity, and bakery process technical knowledge to develop bakery products to support our Co-manufactured and Private Label channels. The Bakery R&D Food Scientist is a member of the R&D team and collaborates with cross-functional teams, including Business Development, Commercialization, Supply Chain and QA/RA, to bring new and improved products to market.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES / WHAT YOU GET TO DO
Product Development:
- Design and formulate new bakery products based on consumer trends, customer requests, or market gaps
- Modify and improve existing product recipes to enhance taste, texture, shelf life, and nutritional content
- Conduct bench, pilot plant and production trials to optimize formulations
Ingredient Sourcing & Research:
- Collaborate with procurement to source novel ingredients needed for new formulations
- Research and experiment with new ingredients to reduce formulation material costs
Process Development:
- Develop scalable product formulations and collaborate with operation and engineering teams to ensure successful large-scale production
- Optimize baking processes for consistency, efficiency, and quality control
- Provide training and support to operations staff on new recipes and processes
Product Testing & Quality Control:
- Conduct product testing to ensure food safety, regulatory compliance, and product quality (e.g., taste, texture, appearance)
- Test products for shelf life, storage stability, and packaging suitability
Customer & Market Focus:
- Stay up to date with bakery trends and competitor products to develop innovative solutions
- Stay up to date with industry developments, ingredients, and emerging technologies
Regulatory & Compliance:
- Collaborate with the Regulatory team to ensure all product formulations comply with food safety regulations and labeling standards
- Work with legal and regulatory teams to manage product claims, certifications (e.g., gluten-free, organic), and ingredient transparency
Collaboration:
- Work closely with cross-functional teams including business development, supply chain, and packaging to develop products that meet the company’s goals
- Communicate findings, challenges, and solutions effectively with stakeholders at various levels on regular intervals
KEY COMPETENCIES / WHAT WE WANT FROM YOU
- Basic understanding of bakery formulation, ingredients, processes and food safety standards
- Proficiency in conducting sensory evaluations and product testing
- Strong problem-solving, project management, and communication skills
- Ability to work collaboratively in a team and meet project deadlines
- Proficiency in Excel and PowerPoint
EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE
- Bachelor’s degree in food science, Culinary Arts, or related field
- 2+ years of experience in bakery product development or a related field
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
- Sitting at a workstation for extended periods of time
- Stand, walk, climb stairs on a frequent basis
- Must be able to lift 20 pounds on an infrequent basis
- Office-based with regular time spent in the test kitchen or production facilities
- Some travel may be required to visit suppliers, production sites, or attend industry conferences
The pay range for this full-time, contract salaried position is $68,300 - $85,500 CAN/year. Individual base pay depends on work location and additional factors such as experience, job-related skills, and relevant education or training. The position is eligible for a discretionary annual incentive based on company and individual performance.
