The Opportunity

As a Risk and Business Continuity Manager you will champion enterprise risk management (ERM) and business continuity across the organization and its subsidiaries. This strategic role plays a critical part in strengthening organizational resilience, ensuring regulatory compliance, and preparing the organization to respond effectively to emerging risks and crises.

Reporting as a trusted advisor to senior leadership, you will embed risk intelligence into decision-making, foster a proactive risk culture, and ensure robust crisis and incident management capabilities are in place.

Key Responsibilities

The successful candidate will be responsible for duties that will include:

  • Lead and continuously enhance Alberta Innovates’ enterprise risk management framework, including policies, standards, and the enterprise risk register.
  • Facilitate enterprise-wide risk identification, assessment, mitigation, and reporting with senior leadership and business units.
  • Develop and deliver risk awareness, training, and communication to embed a strong risk culture.
  • Establish and manage tools to monitor, track, and report on risk, crisis, and continuity status to leadership and governance bodies.
  • Lead the development, implementation, and ongoing improvement of business continuity and crisis management programs aligned with recognized standards.
  • Oversee business recovery planning, crisis readiness, training, simulations, and after-action reviews to strengthen organizational resilience.
  • Build and maintain effective relationships with internal stakeholders, regulators, external partners, and industry peers.
  • Ensure compliance with applicable provincial, national, and international risk and business continuity requirements, support audits and regulatory reviews.
  • Monitor emerging risks, industry trends, and best practices to drive continuous program improvement.
  • Provide subject matter expertise and strategic advice to senior leadership, board committees, and staff.

Required Qualifications and Skills

  • Degree in Business Administration, Risk Management, or a related discipline
  • Minimum 5 years of experience in risk management and/or business continuity roles in corporate, government, or regulated environments
  • Experience working with senior-level leaders
  • Demonstrated ability to collaborate and deliver results
  • Strong knowledge of enterprise risk management frameworks and business continuity standards
  • Ability to build trust and credibility with internal and external stakeholders
  • Ability to lead and support teams during crisis situations
  • Adaptable, resilient, and effective in change management environments

Preferred

  • 7–10 years of progressive experience in risk management and/or business continuity
  • Project management experience
  • Experience in public sector or regulated environments
  • Certified Risk Management Professional (CRM) and/or Certified Business Continuity Professional (CBCP)
  • Project Management Professional (PMP)
  • ISO 22301 Lead Implementer or equivalent
