The School of Life Science & Business provides dynamic high-tech, hands-on learning opportunities in support of animal health, business and horticulture. The School is also home to the National Meat Training Centre and the Olds College Botanic Gardens. A variety of certificates, diplomas and applied degrees are granted from the School of Life Science & Business. Fields of study offered within the School of Life Science & Business are: Animal Health, Business, Equine, Horticulture, and the National Meat Training Centre.
The Opportunity - Instructional Assistant, Meat Centre - permanent, full-time
This position plays a vital role in supporting the National Meat Training Centre (NMTC) at Olds College, assisting instructors in creating a safe, effective, and hands-on learning environment for students. The Instructional Assistant prepares and maintains equipment and materials, provides direct support to students, and contributes to the overall success of the NMTC program.
Key Job Functions:
Support for Instruction & Student Success:
- Provide direct, hands-on support to instructors and students in meat processing labs, focusing on slaughter, value-added, and meat cutting.
- Assist with the collection, preparation, and setup of all materials and equipment needed for instruction, ensuring labs are ready and safe for student use.
- Proactively maintain and organize materials for student study and lab work.
- Assist in exam monitoring and maintain required records to support a smooth learning process.
- Contribute to a positive and collaborative team environment by participating in instructional support teams and other college groups.
- Support college events and promotional activities with a friendly and professional demeanor.
- Duties specific to Meat Processing & Production:
- Execute a variety of meat processing tasks, including knife cutting, bandsaw operation, sausage production, and meat curing.
- Operate and maintain a range of industrial equipment such as a retort kettle, smokehouse, stuffer, grinders, and patty machines.
- Conduct safe and humane slaughter of beef, pork, and lamb.
- Perform advanced meat merchandising.
- Perform product packaging, inventory management using Google Keep, and organization of supplies.
Customer Service & Sales:
- Demonstrate a strong "Customer-First" approach with a professional and helpful attitude toward customers and staff.
- Operate the Point of Sale system, maintain accurate records, and assist with product sales.
- Share in-depth product knowledge with customers, demonstrating passion and expertise.
- Professionally resolve customer issues and complaints, ensuring a positive experience.
- Maintain an organized and visually appealing display counter, ensuring product freshness and rotation.
Safety & Cleanliness:
- Actively promote and follow all workplace and food safety policies to maintain a secure and hygienic environment.
- Ensure regular and thorough sanitation and cleaning of the facility and equipment.
- Assist students in understanding and performing plant sanitation procedures.
- Initiate and complete necessary food safety paperwork with attention to detail.
Education/Experience/Skills/Knowledge Required:
- A Meat Processing certificate or a combination of post-secondary training and relevant industry experience.
- A minimum of two (2) years of applicable experience is required, ideally in a meat processing or instructional setting.
- Proficiency in software programs including Madgetech, Bizerba BMS, and Point of Sale systems is an asset
- Strong computer skills, with proficiency in Google Suite (Drive, Email, Keep, Classroom).
- Proven ability to operate a wide range of meat processing equipment safely and effectively.
- A strong collaborator and team player who can build positive working relationships with instructors, students, and staff.
- Excellent problem-solving abilities and the capacity to adapt to unexpected challenges.
- A patient and supportive approach when working with students who are learning new skills.
- Strong organizational skills with a keen eye for detail to manage inventory, records, and lab preparation efficiently.
- Exceptional communication skills, both written and verbal, to interact clearly with a diverse group of people.
- The ability to work independently with minimal supervision, demonstrating initiative and responsibility.
- A proactive mindset with a desire to anticipate needs and contribute to the team's success.
- A genuine passion for the meat industry and a desire to share that knowledge with the next generation of professionals.
Conditions of Employment:
- May be required to perform heavy lifting (up to 35 KG's), repetitive physical work, and perform duties in adverse freezer conditions.
- Work outside of regular college operating hours may be required and will be scheduled in advance.
- Current Criminal Reference check that is free of any offenses
- Must respect and actively promote health and safety policies.
