LABOURER – ROADS PAVING (Contract Term Temporary Full-Time – Approximately 25 months) Located on the traditional, ancestral and unceded lands of the Musqueam, Squamish, and Tsleil-Waututh Nations, West Vancouver is a vibrant community on the North Shore and home to parks, beaches, and to sports, recreation and arts amenities. The District Of West Vancouver’s Engineering Construction Department Currently Has Openings For Contract Term Temporary Full-time Labourers To Join Our Roads Paving Team. The Successful Candidate Will Perform a Variety Of Manual Tasks Working In The Engineering Construction Department. These Tasks Can Include
- raking of grade materials with a lute, achieving grade and raking swales;
- raking Hot Mix Asphalt (HMA) joints/seams;
- raking and spreading asphalt mixes to the proper grade;
- tamping and smoothing joints, gutters, and connections for asphalt mixtures to properly adhere to the old surface;
- smoothing out defects, which may appear after tamping and rolling of the surface;
- tamping and smoothing asphalt surfaces inaccessible to a roller;
- using hand and power tools to break up street surface material and perform other tasks incidental to the street repair process;
- cleaning trucks and equipment as needed;
- maintaining equipment in a safe and secure manner;
- operating basic hand and power tools such as, shovels, pipe saws, plate tampers, etc;
- maintaining daily pick-up records;
- providing manual labourer assistance on various tasks and assignments; and,
- other related duties, as required.
The Successful Candidates Will Demonstrate The Ability To
- work effectively and efficiently in a team environment while maintaining a safety first mentality;
- use a variety of tools for general maintenance and construction work; and,
- work outdoors in a physically demanding role in all types of weather conditions.
Preference will be given to candidates with any of the following credentials:
- experience or training in road construction or maintenance; experience working in and around traffic;
- landscaping experience (either hardscape or softscape installations);
- experience operating heavy equipment such as a rubber tire roller, mini excavator, chipper, bucket truck, skidsteer, backhoe, and front-end loader; and
- Experience with winter operations such as, snow clearing, salting, etc.
Candidates Possessing The Following Is Considered An Asset
- Valid Class 1 or 3 BC Drivers License;
- Heavy Trailer Endorsement (Code 20)
- Experience as a Traffic Control Person (TCP); and,
- TCP certification.
The candidates must hold a valid BC Class 5 Driver's License. Successful candidates will be required to provide an acceptable driver’s abstract, a police information check, and copies of relevant credentials. Hours Of Work 40 hours per week (hours and days of work may vary)
Starting Rate Of Pay $30.88 per hour (2025 rate) plus 14% in lieu of benefits.
This position has a pay structure with three steps which increase based on hours completed in the position.
After 3 months of continuous service, Contract Term Temporary employees shall be provided with a one (1) time choice between receiving the same benefit, vacation, statutory holidays and leave provisions as permanent employees or fourteen percent (14%) of regular salary in lieu of all benefits.
