The base salary will be $66,350 - $94,700 per annum. Starting salary will be aligned with the successful candidate’s experience, skills, and demonstrated qualifications.

The Schulich School of Medicine & Dentistry is a leading Canadian centre for outstanding education and research. The Schulich School of Medicine & Dentistry’s Research Office aims to enhance the School’s research competitiveness and research capacity, and to foster a culture of research throughout the School.
Responsibilities
The Grants Officer ensures that research funding applications submitted by researchers for internal funding programs within the Schulich School of Medicine & Dentistry, as well as for various external funding opportunities, conform to high submission standards and to Western University and sponsor policies, procedures, and requirements within a complex research funding environment. The role provides guidance and support to faculty on research funding opportunities and proposal development, identifies and communicates deviations from institutional and sponsor requirements, and offers well-researched advice in support of institutional approval processes. The Grants Officer acts as a resource to researchers in navigating Western’s research policies, approval processes, and research administration systems, contributing to the effective submission of compliant and competitive research funding applications.
Qualifications
Education:
- Undergraduate Degree in Health Sciences, Medical Sciences, Life Sciences or relevant discipline
- Master’s Degree in a relevant discipline is preferred
Experience:
- 5 years of experience in reviewing and administering grant proposals in an academic research environment
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:
- Familiarity with best practices for reviewing and writing grant proposals and with Canadian peer-review granting systems, processes and procedures
- Oral and written communication skills with an emphasis on proposal development and delivering presentations
- Verbal communication skills to translate information into easily understood terms, summarize information, and provide a rationale for action
- Ability to work in a manner that models best practices in confidentiality standards
- Customer service skills to understand customer needs and expectations, with a desire to deliver helpful and reliable service to the University community
- Ability to handle details with a high degree of accuracy and to organize and prioritize a high volume of work to meet deadlines
- Professional manner, tact, diplomacy and discretion in dealing with associates and colleagues including senior management
- Intermediate computer skills in Microsoft Office Suite
- Ability to provide guidance, support and feedback in a way that is positively received
- Ability to understand, interpret, and effectively communicate University guidelines, policies and practices to key stakeholders
- Organizational skills to manage multiple assignments that are accurate and thorough, sometimes of a complex nature or involving competing priorities
- Ability to evaluate issues, recognize potential problems and take action to proactively resolve issues
- Ability to identify opportunities for improvement, while being open to trying new ideas and working methods
- Proven ability and natural inclination to develop relationships by interacting with people in a professional, respectful and diplomatic manner
- Ability to research new avenues of funding from federal granting agencies, industry and other funding sources
- Ability to work independently and effectively as a member of the team with diverse perspectives to achieve department goals
- Critical thinking and discernment skills to assess risk related to research grants
- Familiarity with University research policies and procedures preferred
