Shared Health leads the planning and coordinates the integration of patient-centered clinical and preventive health services across Manitoba. The organization also delivers some province-wide health services and supports centralized administrative and business functions for Manitoba health organizations.

Position Overview

Under the general supervision of the Manager, Occupational Therapy, the Clinical Specialist provides expert consultation and guidance to staff in the area of specialty through clinical leadership, mentoring, education, evaluation and research. Contributes to the delivery of quality specialty services by examining, developing, refining and evaluating the specialty body of knowledge and care practices. Provides quality occupational therapy services including assessment, intervention, program planning and implementation, discharge planning, and follow-up. Provides educational programs to students, other health care professionals and within the community.

Experience

  • Minimum three years of recent, clinical experience of which one year must be in the specialty area.

Education (Degree/Diploma/Certificate)

  • Entry-to-practice academic credential in Occupational Therapy from an accredited Canadian university program or the approved equivalent if internationally educated as determined by the College of Occupational Therapists of Manitoba (COTM).
  • Extensive post-graduate education in occupational therapy or a related field preferred.
  • Successful completion of relevant professional education in designated clinical area required.

Certification/Licensure/Registration

  • Registration is required with the College of Occupational Therapists of Manitoba (COTM) with the incumbent’s name entered on the practising register or on the provisional register as an examination candidate.
  • Where the incumbent is provisionally registered as an examination candidate, he/she must pass the examination required by COTM to maintain employment with the WRHA or Centre.
  • Membership in the Manitoba Society of Occupational Therapists (MSOT) and the Canadian Association of Occupational Therapists (CAOT) preferred.
  • Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) training requirements for this position shall be in accordance with the Employer policy.

Qualifications and Skills

  • Demonstrates leadership, coaching and mentoring abilities.

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills and excellent interpersonal skills.

  • Good organizational skills.

  • Demonstrated expertise in adult education preferred.

  • Working knowledge of research/program evaluation methodology.

  • Ability to work with minimal direction.

  • Ability to function within a computerized environment.

  • A team player.

  • Excellent customer service skills.

More than 8,000 staff, physicians and volunteers care for patients. Highly-skilled interdisciplinary teams provide complex, specialist (“tertiary”) acute care, including diagnostic, outpatient and inpatient services to adults and children across Manitoba, north-western Ontario and Nunavut.

HSC is a Shared Health facility, and is Manitoba’s provincial tertiary centre for trauma, transplants, burns, neurosciences, complex cancer care and pediatric care. Every clinical hospital-based service available in the province is offered at HSC, with the exception of cardiac surgery and eye surgery. This means the majority of Manitobans’ tertiary care is provided here, regardless of which community our patients call home.
