Laboratory of Dr. Bo Wang Dr. Bo Wang is a tenured Associate Professor at the University of Toronto, Chief AI Scientist at the University Health Network, a CIFAR AI chair at the Vector Institute and the Senior Vice President and Head of Biomedical AI at Xaira Therapeutics. His research focuses on machine learning, computational biology and computer vision with an emphasis on applications in biomedicine and has now published over 100 high impact academic papers, including in Nature, Nature Biotechnology, Nature Methods, and Lancet Digital Health.
Position Summary This fellow is dedicated to advancing research at the intersection of artificial intelligence and biomedicine. The successful candidate will contribute to developing generative models and foundational models that transform genomics , medical imaging , clinical research, and clinical decision-making , with an emphasis on interpretability, scalability, and biomedical impact.
Key Responsibilities
- Develop and train large-scale AI models targeting the domains above.
- Integrate heterogeneous data, such as genomic, imaging, clinical, and textual, into unified modeling frameworks.
- Prioritize model interpretability and robust uncertainty characterization.
- Collaborate across U of T, UHN, and Vector Institute, including potential industry partnership initiatives.
- Mentor graduate students, contribute to lab seminars, and present research both internally and externally.
Research Focus This position centers on developing advanced algorithms in AI for biomedicine, including:
- Genomics and Multi-omics Modeling
- Build scalable AI frameworks that integrate single-cell and multi-omic data to model cellular states, uncover biomarkers, and predict molecular behavior.
- Biomedical Image Analysis
- Develop foundation models and multi-modal models for accurate diagnostics, treatment planning, and disease monitoring across imaging modalities such as histopathology and radiology.
- Clinical Research
- Empowers clinical research by accelerating data analysis, improving trial design, optimizing patient recruitment, and enhancing predictive modeling to ultimately making studies faster, more accurate, and cost-effective.
Clinical Decision Support
- Empower data-driven decision-making by fusing clinical narratives, imaging outputs, and molecular profiles into cohesive, interpretable models that support patient diagnosis, prognosis, and treatment planning.
Qualifications
- PhD in Computer Science, Computational Biology, Biomedical Informatics, Biomedical Engineering, and Applied Mathematics, or a related field.
- Strong background in machine learning, with experience relevant to generative models (e.g., LLMs), foundation models and multimodal data analysis.
- Proficiency in programming and standard deep learning frameworks (e.g., PyTorch, Transformers).
- Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively and work collaboratively in interdisciplinary environments.
- Publication record indicative of rigorous, impactful research.
