About the role
Job Summary:
Within the context of a client service culture and under general supervision performs wash up and clerical functions for the Pathology & Laboratory Department. Duties include washing, drying and sterilizing laboratory glassware using an automatic dishwasher and drying ovens, autoclaving contaminated material such as specimens or media, preparing cleaning solutions, filing a variety of material and distributing material as required in accordance with departmental procedures.
Duties/Accountabilities:

Washes, dries and sterilizes laboratory glassware and pipettes by methods such as separating out decontaminated materials and containers, soaking items in detergent solution, rinsing and loading items into automatic glassware washer and drying items in the ovens.

Prepares cleaning solution by methods such as mixing fluids according to a predetermined formula and dispensing into appropriate containers for use.

Autoclaves contaminated materials such as specimens or media by placing containers in autoclave chamber and setting dials to predetermined setting; empties autoclave and separates decontaminated or non-reusable materials from items requiring washing and sterilization.

Wraps sterilized items such as swabs, pipettes and glass tubes by indicating type of item and/or date of sterilization on package prior to shelving in designated areas.

Maintains work areas by washing items such as laboratory equipment, work surfaces and benches, defrosting and cleaning laboratory freezers and refrigerators and stocking areas with clean glassware according to established policies and procedures.

Collects and delivers various items such as clean linen, laboratory coats, supplies and equipment to other areas within department and notifies supervisor of depleting stocks.

Files a material such as reports, worksheets, requisitions and forms for various areas within Pathology & Laboratory Medicine by following established filing procedures/systems in accordance with department standards.

Sorts and distributes test requisitions, test results and reports as required by methods such as receiving completed requisitions or reports from technologist, separating copies for filing and distribution and forwarding appropriate copies and/or reports to designated areas; counts requisitions and batches them for microfiching as directed.

Photocopies, faxes and distributes material for personnel within Pathology & Laboratory Medicine as directed by Supervisor by receiving items for duplication and operating photocopying or facsimile machine.

Performs other related duties as required.
Qualifications:
EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE
Grade 10 or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience.
KNOWLEDGE & ABILITIES
Ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing.
Ability to deal with others effectively.
Ability to operate related equipment.
Ability to organize work.
Physical ability to carry out the duties of the position.
