Job Description:
Position Purpose summary: The Thrift general helper provides service to customers, sorts incoming product and assists in the ongoing retail operations of The Salvation Army Thrift Store.
Accountabilities
Operations:
- Interact with customers/donors in a positive, friendly, and courteous manner.
- Protect the integrity of all donated items.
- Process raw materials by loading/unloading, sorting, packing, pricing and storing donations.
- Possess knowledge of stock to respond to customer enquiries by phone/in person.
- Pay particular attention to store security by monitoring activity within the store.
- Handle merchandise in a safe and organized manner, and assist with stock rotation.
- Contribute to the inventory control by receiving, sorting, and pricing as per directions.
- Assist with store layout plans to attract customers, which include window displays and merchandise displays; ensure attractiveness of the store through “Tidy Maintenance”.
- Replenish inventory levels based on the supervisor’s directions.
- Removal of inventory from the sales floor as directed.
- Maintain the proper sorting and processing of all donated goods, and ensure compliance with quality standards.
- Maintain an attractive, organized appearance of the store. Tidy up and restock shelves, clean, sweep, dust and mop as necessary.
- Abide by store policy and procedures.
- Perform other position-related duties as required.
- Seasonal - keep walkway and entrance clear of snow and ice.
Working Conditions:
- This is a temporary position
- Schedule may vary from week to week and include weekdays and Saturdays
- Flexibility in scheduling is required.
- Includes a ½ hour unpaid meal-break where applicable
- Able to stand for long periods with frequent twisting, bending, crouching and reaching is required.
- Ability to lift/move up to 30 pounds
- The Supervisor will set the hours of work and work schedule.
Education, Qualifications and Certifications:
- Completion of Secondary School.
- Alternative combinations of education and experience may be considered.
Experience and Skilled Knowledge Requirements:
- No prior experience necessary - training will be provided.
Skills and Capabilities:
- Develop an understanding of the Mission of The Salvation Army in Canada and its implications as related to position responsibilities.
- Maintain information in confidence as required
- Participate as an active and responsible team member.
- Participate in mandatory orientation training.
- Participate in regular supervision and performance appraisal process.
- Represent the organization professionally and engagingly.
- Must comply with all Salvation Army policies and procedures and associated legislation.
- Brand awareness would be an asset.
- Able to stand for long periods with frequent twisting, bending, crouching and reaching is required.
- Exhibit good listening skills, have strong oral/written communication skills and respect authority
- Self-motivated/disciplined.
- Represent The Salvation Army in a positive manner
- Work in compliance with OH&S Act and Regulations and abide by The Salvation Army’s health and safety policies and procedures.
- Excellent interpersonal skills, integrity, and adaptability.
- Strong oral and written communication skills.
- Ability to work in a cooperative team-oriented atmosphere.
- Provide an original copy of a Background Check that is satisfactory to The Salvation Army, in its sole discretion is required. The screening is secured either through the national Canadian Police Information Centre (CPIC) or through a local police detachment
- May require screening through The Salvation Army Abuse Registry.
- Support for and an understanding of the mission and purpose of The Salvation Army in Canada.
Compensation:
The target hiring range for this position is $17.00 to $18.08 with a maximum of $21.69.
Placement in the salary range will be based on factors such as market conditions, internal equity, and candidate experience, skills, and qualifications relevant to the role.
