Together, we thrive as we shape the future of health for patients, our communities, and our people. If you want to be part of tomorrow's health today, we want to hear from you.

About The Role

The Senior Data Specialist at McKesson plays a critical role in designing, developing, and maintaining the company's enterprise data infrastructure. This position involves leading efforts to build scalable data pipelines, optimize ETL/ELT processes, and ensure data quality and compliance within a regulated environment. The role requires a combination of technical expertise, strategic thinking, and collaboration with cross-functional teams to enable advanced analytics, AI-driven initiatives, and data-driven decision-making.

As a senior member of the data engineering team, you will be responsible for creating custom software components, managing metadata repositories, and implementing data standardization and governance practices. Your work will directly influence the company's ability to leverage data for strategic insights and operational efficiencies, supporting initiatives across healthcare analytics, clinical research, and business intelligence.

Qualifications

The ideal candidate will possess a strong background in data engineering, with hands-on experience in building and maintaining large-scale data pipelines and platforms. A bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, or a related field is required; a master's degree is preferred. Typically, candidates will have at least 7+ years of relevant experience in data management, analytics, or similar roles, especially within regulated industries such as healthcare.

Key technical skills include advanced proficiency in SQL and Python, with familiarity in R being a plus. Experience with modern data platforms such as Databricks, Snowflake, and Azure Data Factory is essential. Knowledge of big data technologies like Hadoop, Kafka, and distributed file systems is highly desirable. Strong understanding of data modeling, metadata management, data governance, and security protocols is also required. Effective communication, leadership abilities, and the capacity to mentor junior team members are critical for success in this role.

Responsibilities

Design and implement scalable data pipelines and ETL/ELT processes to integrate complex data sources across internal and external systems, supporting both batch and real-time processing. Write and optimize advanced SQL and Python queries to enhance data processing performance and analytical outcomes. Lead data exploration, requirements gathering, and source identification for analytical and operational use cases. Develop and maintain comprehensive metadata repositories, including data definitions, lineage, and business rules, ensuring data integrity and usability across enterprise systems. Create and implement processes for data standardization, quality improvement, and governance compliance. Identify and troubleshoot complex data issues, optimize database and pipeline performance, and resolve conflicts in data models. Develop reusable query libraries and custom software components to support analytics, reporting, and AI/ML solutions. Recommend and adopt modern tools, technologies, and best practices to enhance data engineering capabilities and platform performance. Ensure adherence to security, regulatory, and governance standards through rigorous data validation, quality checks, and documentation. Support testing, monitoring, and validation of data pipelines, including the development of test cases and quality assurance procedures. Collaborate with cross-functional teams to align data solutions with enterprise architecture, business priorities, and governance standards. Provide technical leadership, influence design decisions, and mentor junior team members to promote best practices and continuous improvement.
