Job Summary
The primary focus of this position will be to provide research and operational assistance for the Reproductive Infectious Diseases research team and PI. The research team has several projects underway or in their analysis stage, including:

  • A Study of Reduced Dosing of the Nonavalent HPV Vaccine in Women Living with HIV
  • Towards the eradication of congenital syphilis in Canada (REACT-Syph): Canadian Maternal and Congenital Syphilis Surveillance

These studies are coordinated centrally from the Department of Obstetrics & Gynaecology. The research assistant will support studies through data abstraction and entry, preparation of study materials, ethics application support, and other tasks as needed.

Organizational Status
Reports to the Principal Investigator and Research Manager. They will work in collaboration as a member of an interdisciplinary team with academic researchers, research staff, and clinicians at UBC and partner institutions.

Work Performed
Maintains research related records and databases, entering data according to established protocols

  • Assists with development and review of data collection forms
  • Performs basic literature reviews
  • Supports team efforts with internal and external partners
  • Assists with the preparation of ethics applications and renewals
  • Organizes and participates in in-person and virtual research meetings
  • Attends regular internal meetings of study team members
  • Compiles study reports
  • Creates and distributes study materials
  • Assists with the preparation of abstracts, manuscripts, and presentations
  • Orders and maintains inventory of study materials
  • Develops content for research program website and social media

Carries out any other related duties as required in keeping with the qualifications and requirements of positions in this classification

Consequence of Error/Judgement
The Research Assistant is required to conduct all activities in an ethical manner and with adherence to the Tri- Council Policy Statement concerning Ethical Conduct for Research Involving Humans.

Supervision Received
The Research Assistant will receive supervision from the Principal Investigator and Research Manager.

Supervision Given
The Research Assistant may at times liaise and instruct students or staff at a lower work classification. They may provide training to undergrad students or new tech staff.

Minimum Qualifications
Completion of a relevant technical program or a university degree in a relevant discipline and a minimum three years of related experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Undergraduate or graduate coursework in health science

  • Knowledge of and experience in a research environment

  • Proficiency in MS Excel and MS Office applications

  • Ability to work under pressure and meet deadlines

  • Ability to work independently and effectively in multidisciplinary project teams

  • Ability to communicate effectively verbally and in writing.

  • Demonstrated ability to show initiative and self-directed work habits.

  • Ability to maintain accuracy and attention to detail.

  • Ability to collaborate with a diversity of people in a calm, respectful, and effective manner.
