Compensation Range

In the normal course, employees will be hired, transferred or promoted between the minimum and midpoint of the salary range for a job.

Job Summary

The School of Biomedical Engineering (SBME) at the University of British Columbia (UBC) is a partnership between the Faculties of Applied Science and Medicine, established in 2017. The IT Support Specialist provides day-to-day technical support and services for over 40+ full-time faculty, 350+ graduate students and research staff along with 6 fee-for-service core facilities. Working closely with the IT Systems Manager, the incumbent supports the School’s education, research, and administrative IT functions by coordinating IT information from various administrative portfolios, research labs and units, as well as advising on best practices for handling sensitive user and research data.

Organizational Status

Reports directly to the IT Systems Manager, and works collaboratively with other members of the operations team. Interacts with SBME faculty, staff, students, and researchers as a first point of contact for IT issues. May liaise with UBC IT, Medicine IT, Applied Science IT, and vendors under direction from the IT Systems Manager.

Work Performed

  • Performs analysis, diagnosis, and resolution of advanced desktop problems for users, recommends and implements corrective solutions and documents all support incidents into the ticketing system.
  • Diagnoses and remediates system-level issues across Windows, macOS, and Linux platforms, including problems in productivity suites, print services, and TCP/IP connectivity of devices.
  • Supports a wide variety of desktop and research-specific software for Windows, macOS, and Linux operating systems. Some of the software and/or packages are unique and niche to a particular research focus.
  • Investigates bug reports, determines their priority and validity, and communicates relevant technical information.
  • Installs, configures, tests, and troubleshoots workstations and related hardware and software.
  • Maintains the security of the department’s IT resources by deploying software updates, security patches, and endpoint protection tools.
  • Onboards and off-boards faculty, staff, and students in compliance with departmental and university standards.
  • Configures and maintains user access rights across integrated systems by leveraging identity management tools.
  • Develops instructional materials and provides training for users in use and configuration of software, hardware, network systems and peripheral equipment.
  • Coordinates computer, peripheral, and software license purchases with our research community.
  • Develops backup plans to ensure data is safe from loss or damage.
  • Executes cybersecurity initiatives including threat detection, vulnerability assessment, incident response, and implementing preventative safeguards.
  • Ensures reliable audiovisual functionality in critical meetings and learning environments by deploying, maintaining, and resolving issues with AV hardware.
  • Provides advice on information technology improvements, services, and procedures.
  • Administers and updates asset management systems to ensure precise tracking of departmental IT hardware, associated service-level agreements, warranty coverage, supporting lifecycle management and compliance auditing.
  • Escalates more complex or unresolved issues to the IT Systems Manager.
  • Participates in special projects and initiatives under the direction of the IT Systems Manager.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.

Consequence of Error/Judgement

Errors in troubleshooting or configuration could disrupt teaching, research, or administrative functions. The position requires sound judgment, a strong sense of responsibility, and an ability to handle confidential or sensitive data appropriately.

Supervision Received

Receives day-to-day guidance and task prioritization from the IT Systems Manager. Works independently on routine assignments and tasks with support and review as needed.

Minimum Qualifications
Undergraduate degree in a relevant discipline. Minimum of one year of related experience, or the equivalent combination of education and experience.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Undergraduate degree in Computer Science or equivalent discipline with relevant training and significant experience in managing computer systems and applications preferred.
  • Knowledge of, and experience supporting, Microsoft Windows, MacOS, Red Hat/Ubuntu Linux, virtualization, network stack, complex storage systems (ZFS), database systems, scripting and programming languages (Python, PowerShell, PHP, etc.).
  • Previous experience providing IT support in a service-oriented environment preferably in an academic institution or public sector an asset.
  • Ability to analyze and redesign workflow/business processes to make them more efficient and effective.
  • Ability to take initiative, work independently, under pressure and handle multiple tasks.
  • Excellent organizational and analytical skills.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Demonstrated commitment to equity, diversity, and inclusion in a team environment.
