Saskatchewan’s Ministry of Parks, Culture and Sport is currently seeking a dynamic, inclusive, strategic leader for the position of Executive Director, Park Operations. This position reports to the Assistant Deputy Minister, Parks Division.

Saskatchewan’s provincial parks have experienced high levels of visitation over the last several years. This growth offers an exciting opportunity for the Executive Director of Operations to lead an innovative team across the province as they serve visitors, collaborate with stakeholders and protect park land for future generations to enjoy.

Our candidate of choice will be collaborative and demonstrate critical thinking. They will be willing to challenge long standing practices and facilitate creative solutions. They will possess superior leadership and communication skills. Proven experience managing people in remote locations is essential, as is the ability to establish and maintain effective partnerships and working relationships with field staff and stakeholders.

The successful candidate will:

  • Provide provincial leadership and direction to develop and manage programs and services that support provincial park recreation, conservation and management goals which are aligned with government’s overall objectives for parks;
  • Set the strategic direction for the Branch, including allocating the operating budget, promoting a one team approach, implementing policy and procedures;
  • Develop and implement strategies to reach goals and further organizational objectives;
  • Collaborate with a broader parks executive team within Parks Division, and with central support areas including Communications;
  • Influence others in order to have a specific impact or effect; and
  • Manage multiple units of work with complex challenges.

This position works specifically in the Parks Division, is part of the Parks Executive team and the Ministry’s Senior Leadership committee. The Ministry of Parks, Culture and Sport's strategic focus is on quality of life and economic growth, and we do this by working with diverse groups and communities to enhance the province’s cultural, artistic, recreational and social life. We promote excellence in the arts, culture, heritage and sport and represent the interests of the province’s French-language population. The ministry also manages and enhances Saskatchewan’s provincial parks system and the Royal Saskatchewan Museum, conserving ecosystems and cultural resources and providing recreational and interpretive opportunities for visitors.

  • Proven experience managing people is essential, as is the ability to establish and maintain effective partnerships and working relationships with field staff and stakeholders;
  • Creates a healthy work environment by establishing and maintaining effective working relationships, demonstrating and promoting mentoring, self-reliance and professional growth;
  • Is recognized as innovative, a change agent and a true influencer to achieve success at the team, ministry and government level;
  • Aligns personal vision and values with corporate goals and objectives; and
  • Is able to travel across the province, approximately 25 per cent of the time, and sometimes for several continuous days.

What You Will Need:

  • Leadership, superior interpersonal skills, issues management and the capacity to excel in high pressure situations are essential;
  • Superior analytical and execution skills, combined with clear proficiency in evaluating issues, offering alternatives and creating solutions;
  • The ability to build commitment through collaboration, consultation and consideration of citizen and stakeholder impact and seek out opportunities for innovation and continuous improvement; and
  • Well-developed written and oral communication skills and the ability to work with and influence a variety of stakeholders.

Qualifications required:
Typically, the knowledge and skills required for this position would be obtained through a degree or a related discipline combined with operations, program, project and policy development experience in a government setting and significant experience related to leadership, HR and parks management. Knowledge of current trends, issues and practices in park management is an asset.
