Job Summary
The Systems Engineer is accountable for applying specialized knowledge and expertise in preparing plans for the development of capital projects; completing designs and specifications to meet specific operational requirements; managing projects to procure and implement; and aiding lifecycle management of the systems and equipment within the Department of Weather Information Systems area of responsibility. This position usually works under the general guidance of Senior Systems Engineers.
Work normally involves: (a) planning and performing studies/medium-level projects assisted by technical support staff, or engineering work as part of a project; or (b) planning and performing applied research, development or innovative design work in engineering specialty and carrying out experiments and tests.

You’ll also be accountable for applying and developing specialized knowledge in the design, development, and integration of systems that help the aviation community in Canada from coast to coast to coast. Your technical leadership will contribute to the successful provision of navigation and weather information services across the country.
Key Accountabilities:
- Develops detailed plans, system designs, and specifications for the provision of electronic and software systems as required to meet operational, technical, and safety requirements.
- Initiates, coordinates, oversees, and monitors engineering work done by others throughout the planning, design, procurement, and implementation stages of projects.
- Provides professional engineering guidance and financial input to support the capital investments program.
- Provides prompt assistance when requested to investigate technical problems with in-service operational systems.
- Ongoing participation and development of project and product processes and safety management plans.
- Actively promotes a high standard of Engineering Workmanship and Safety & Quality culture
Job Requirements
Education:
- Graduation with a minimum of a bachelor’s degree from a recognized university in electronics, communications, computer, software, or systems engineering.
- Certification or eligibility for certification as a Professional Engineer in Canada.
Experience:
- 3-5 years experience in the planning, design, procurement, implementation, and life-cycle support activities of electronics and/or software systems.
- Experience in the development and support of specifications, standards, and procedures.
- Experience building test cases in accordance with engineering standards and internal processes.
Knowledge :
- Knowledge of electronic theory, computer systems, software design, and network management.
- Knowledge of project management principles and agile development & testing methodologies.
- Knowledge of maintenance processes, procedures, and business functions in the context of the air navigation business.
- Knowledge of a Safety Management System and its application to project and life cycle activities.
- Working knowledge of flight information, navigation, and weather systems
Abilities :
- Ability to formulate and evaluate proposals related to feasibility studies, design concepts, testing, implementation, and life-cycle management of large hardware and/or software systems.
- Ability to satisfy operational requirements and systems engineering integration objectives by analyzing and defining user, operational, and technical requirements and preparing appropriate system specifications.
- Ability to provide accurate effort estimates, track schedule, and provide timely reports for management.
- Ability to assess the applicability and feasibility of established and emerging technologies and standards related to information systems.
- Ability to set priorities, to adapt to changing priorities, to work under minimal supervision, to work in a team, and to handle multiple concurrent projects.
- Ability to solve complex problems by defining and implementing practical solutions.
- Ability to communicate effectively in English both orally and in writing.

Working conditions :
- This position is a hybrid position with a minimum – 3 days per week on site at the Ottawa Technical Systems Centre – 280 Hunt Club.
- Occasional travel across all parts of Canada
- Possibility of work outdoors in variable environmental conditions.
- Possession of a valid Driver’s Licence
