About the role
Duties and Responsibilities:
Reporting to and under the direction of the Assistant Director (Residence Life Services), the Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion Coordinator will maintain and help provide recommendations on how to further develop student engagement and student co-created curricular strategies that focus on strengthening Equity, Diversity and Inclusion (EDI) as well as Indigenous Awareness in the residence community. The incumbent will be the subject area expert in Housing and Residence Life Services (H&RLS) and is responsible for implementing the EDI frameworks and supporting belonging for all in the Department of Housing and Residence Life Services.
In addition, this role will support the continued development of EDI initiatives for the entire department and support the EDI Action Plan by recommending changes to the Director. This position is required to work collaboratively and positively with various campus partners as well as student groups, student staff, OPVSE departments, the Department of Equity and Inclusive Communities, and the Centre for Indigenous Support and Community Engagement.
Qualifications:
The incumbent must possess the following qualifications:
- Understand client service orientation, with skill in overcoming objections and problem solving to identify a good customer solution for our students and faculty partners.
- Strong initiative and creativity in order to problem solve and maintain relationships. Attention to detail is important for all aspects of the position.
- Knowledge of student life and related issues, presentation experience, and training experience are essential.
- Knowledge and expertise in translating EDI theory to practice is essential.
- An understanding of Indigenous issues including, but not limited reconciliation, decolonization, and Indigenous sovereignty will be important for the successful performance of this position.
- Demonstrate proven experience in building relationships with stakeholders based on mutual trust, respect, genuineness, and commitment.
Education and Experience:
The above is normally acquired through the completion of:
- Completion of a four (4) year undergraduate degree (preferably in Human Rights; Equity, Diversity and Inclusion; Higher Education; Multi-Cultural Studies; Social Work; or other related field).
- A Master’s degree in a related field would be considered an asset.
- Three (3) years’ experience with advising and working with students in a residence or community setting in an EDI or Indigenous program related role.
- Must have demonstrated knowledge of and sensitivity to underrepresented, and/or traditionally marginalized student populations.
- Experience incorporating the perspectives of multiple communities.
- Experience coordinating student experiences and activities in a university or college setting.
- Previous experience with both advising and supervising student staff/groups.
- Experience facilitating presentations and working groups.
