Position: Registered Nurse – Lactation Consultant

Work Type: Part-Time

Position Summary :

The Lactation consultant RN provides consultation and support for families requiring assistance with breast-feeding and planning for the care of healthy and complex neonates. This individual will be an active participant in department activities which facilitates achievement of department goals and objectives through the following practices:

  • Works with staff, patients and families as partners in care; collaborates to continuously improve the patient experience
  • Collaborates with internal stakeholders and community and tertiary partners to plan, implement, and monitor the delivery of patient- and family- centered care
  • Shares knowledge of current trends in newborn care and breast-feeding practice and research.
  • Provides patient advocacy in communication with all Health Care Professionals
  • Participates in nursing research related to care of the neonate and breastfeeding
  • Contributes to ensuring there is a safe environment for patients, staff and visitors

Position Requirements:

  • Current Certificate of Competence from College of Nurses of Ontario
  • International Board Certified Lactation Consultant (I.B.C.L.C.) or completing requirements for eligibility to write exams
  • 3 years current experience in Perinatal Nursing
  • Mandatory NRP
  • College certificate in Perinatal Nursing preferred
  • Demonstrated competency in providing support and direction in the care of healthy and complex neonates and in providing support and care to breast-feeding women
  • Highly motivated, self-directed and well organized
  • Demonstrated excellent verbal/written skills including telephone counseling skills
  • Demonstrated expertise in Adult Learning and patient teaching principles
  • Skill in motivating others to understand new approaches in the delivery of health care services
  • Demonstrated excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Demonstrated ability to build effective working relationships and teams
  • Demonstrated ability to multi-task and prioritize in a fast-paced, dynamic environment
  • Excellent performance and good attendance record.
