BASIC FUNCTION:

There is an exciting opportunity for a Project Engineer to join us and demonstrate excellence in engineering practices. This position will serve as an expert professional-level, mechanical engineer and will provide leadership in the mechanical design, fabrication, installation and commissioning of TRIUMF’s key projects, starting with Canada’s most advanced isotope laboratory (ARIEL) and later moving to investigating the properties of Ultra-Cold Neutrons (UCN). There will also be the opportunity to provide engineering support for TRIUMF’s full portfolio of projects when needed.

ORGANIZATIONAL RELATIONSHIPS:

  • The Project Engineer reports directly to the Group Leader of the Project Engineering group who provides general technical direction and over-arching priority direction.
  • Part of the Project Engineering Group, a dedicated group of mechanical engineers assigned to diverse project teams tasked with designing, building, and commissioning scientific and technical infrastructure to further TRIUMF’s research goals.
  • These relationships are characterized by respect, professionalism and competence.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Act as the Engineer of Record in accordance with all applicable codes, standards and legislation, as well as TRIUMF’s Professional Practice Management Plan
  • Significantly contribute to a large/complex engineering scope including conceptual design, detailed design, procurement/fabrication, installation, testing, commissioning, and operation of specialized equipment, with timelines greater than 1 year
  • Proactive project management of the project team to achieve scientific and engineering deliverables while managing the balance of quality, costs, and schedule.
  • Lead cross-functional work that extends beyond own area of expertise including coordination across engineering disciplines and with specialists
  • Write, review and approve technical documents such as requirements specification, drawings/schematics, engineering reports, commissioning reports, operating manuals, etc.
  • Identify the need for engineering analysis that lies outside of the candidate’s expertise and request the resources from other internal resources or outsource to third parties.
  • Manage safety on the job by ensuring all installation and maintenance work is done in accordance with TRIUMF procedures and safety protocols, and seek to improve upon best practices
  • Propose production methods and communicate with the Design and Fabrication Group on the preparation of engineering drawings and fabrication of components
  • Coordinate the field installation of equipment, and commission and troubleshoot with TRIUMF technicians or external contractors

WORK LOCATION:

The successful candidate will work on site at TRIUMF full-time for the first year and may switch to a hybrid office setting with some job functions that must be performed on site while some that can be done remotely.

SUPERVISION EXERCISED:

  • There are no supervisory responsibilities associated with this position.
  • It is expected to grow into a co-lead position on a project team to achieve scientific and engineering deliverables while managing the balance of quality, costs, and schedule.
  • The success candidate will provide constructive technical guidance, training, oversight and motivation to technicians, designers, millwrights, and students, including mentorship to more junior engineers across multiple teams.
  • You would review and approve the work of Engineers-in-Training and perform independent engineering checks of other Professional Engineers when applicable.

KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS:

Leadership, Business, and Communication skills:

  • Excellent oral and written technical communication skills in English.
  • Ability to comfortably explain/present complex ideas to internal and external audiences, anticipate potential objections, and prepare a case accordingly, and advocate for the best solution to key gatekeepers
  • Ability to build consensus among physicists, designers, technicians, engineers, and project managers.
  • Able to plan, organize and effectively manage a functional team or project using your understanding of project management fundamentals
  • A breadth of expertise to work within your own discipline and with other disciplines to effectively integrate designs into systems.
  • Demonstrated ability to balance competing priorities and plan work to meet customer deliverables.
  • Ability to coordinate the field installation of equipment, commission and troubleshoot with TRIUMF technicians or external contractors
  • A sense of ownership and a proactive effort to identify, pursue, and lead process improvements internal to TRIUMF

Technical skills:

  • Experience with SolidWorks PDM or equivalent CAD software
  • Experience with ANSYS or equivalent CAE software
  • Experience with Mathcad or similar software to document engineering calculations
  • Experience applying rigorous mechanical engineering analysis in the areas of machine design, strength of materials, structural stress analysis, fluid flow, and heat transfer.
  • Strong problem-solving skills, sound engineering judgement, and attention to details
  • Experience in preparation and review of mechanical drawings for manufacturing.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of relevant safety regulations and practices
  • Experience with mechanical assembly work, power tools and common manufacturing processes
  • Experience with Design for Manufacture and Assembly (DFMA)
  • Proficiency with Geometric Design and Tolerancing (GD&T)

Although not a requirement, the below knowledge, skills and experience would be considered an asset to your application:

  • Experience with authentication/stamping of engineering deliverables
  • Proficiency with EGBC quality management guidelines
  • Ability to read and develop piping and instrumentation diagrams (P&ID)
  • Ability to use risk management tools to manage engineered systems (DFMEA).
  • Any experience with nuclear facilities and equipment design for radiation environments
  • Any experience with pressure piping or pressure vessels
  • Any experience with cryostats and cryogenics
  • Any experience with nuclear ventilation
  • PMP certification
  • Design experience with gaskets and seals
  • Experience with cranes and rigging

NUCLEAR ENERGY WORKER:

The position requires you to be given Advanced Radiation Protection Training and designated as a TRIUMF Nuclear Energy Worker. This will give you the basic awareness of what radiation is, its health effects, and how to safely work near radioactive materials and sources, focusing on minimizing exposure using principles such as time, distance, and shielding.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS AND YEARS OF EXPERIENCE:

  • A minimum of 8 years of professional industry experience in progressively more complex, similar roles. Bachelor’s or higher degree in mechanical engineering, mechatronics, engineering physics with a mechanical specialization, or equivalent.
  • Registered as a Professional Engineer with Engineers & Geoscientists of British Columbia (EGBC) in good standing, or eligibility for immediate registration transferal from another province.

Applicants must be legally able to work in Canada on a permanent basis (Canadian Citizen or Permanent Resident).

COMPENSATION:

Annual salary of $111,775.00 CAD plus our comprehensive employer-paid benefits plan.
