The Centre for Addiction and Mental Health (CAMH) is the largest mental health and addiction teaching hospital in Canada, as well as one of the world's leading research centres in its field. Our services are delivered to help transform the lives of people affected by mental illness and addictions. Skills Situated within CAMH is the Collaborative Learning College (CLC), a strengths-based, recovery-oriented education program that offers nonclinical-based education and training programs to people who have lived/living experience of mental health and/or substance use challenges, and who feel ready to set goals, gain skills and make social connections as part of their personal journey. In keeping with internationally adopted approach to recovery-oriented education, the courses offered at the Collaborative Learning College are:

  • co-created and co-led by people with lived experience of mental health and/or addiction challenges and/or social services use
  • offered free of charge
  • adaptable to local needs and resources
  • open to people who have experienced mental health and/or addiction challenges and/or social services use, their family members, friends and health care providers, when appropriate.

The CLC is seeking a full-time, permanent Scientist with a specialized focus on the co-production of research and evaluation with people with lived/living experience. In this capacity, the successful candidate will report directly to the Senior Scientist & Director of the Education Research unit, spearheading critical research initiatives aimed at improving care for the patients of today and innovating care for the patients of tomorrow.

Primary responsibilities will involve the establishment and management of a robust research program and team. The Scientist will play a pivotal role in generating and exploring innovative research ideas, while also contributing to the education of emerging scientists. Furthermore, the incumbent will actively promote knowledge exchange within the field of patient and family education.

The selected candidate is expected to provide expert guidance in research, offering training, supervision, and mentorship to staff and students across diverse disciplines. Emphasis will be placed on leading the development and implementation of impactful research aimed at enhancing systems of care for individuals accessing the CLC.

Adherence to approved CAMH practices, procedures, and safety standards is imperative in conducting research studies. Beyond research commitments, the Scientist will collaborate within a multidisciplinary environment and hold a commitment to fostering diversity, encouraging teamwork, and ensuring compliance with regulatory and legislative requirements.

The successful candidate will be expected to establish collaborations at the local, national, and international levels. Additionally, practical supervision of undergraduate, graduate, post-doctoral trainees, and technical staff is integral to the role. As a Scientist, active leadership in research activities, maintenance of a high impact publication record, and securing extramural funding are key responsibilities. Dissemination of research results through presentations at academic meetings, conferences, and communication with key decision-makers is expected. Participation in leadership advisory groups, both within CAMH and externally, is also a requirement.

As a fully affiliated institution with the University of Toronto, the successful applicant will need to secure academic affiliation at the Assistant Professor level. The role is based at 1025 Queen Street, Toronto, Ontario.

Job Requirements The successful applicant is required to have a Ph.D. as well as 3 years post-doctoral experience. This individual will have established knowledge of mental health, addictions, recovery education, or participatory action research, through demonstrated experience leading research projects in partnership with people with lived and living experience (PWLE) and/or co-producing knowledge within community-based or educational settings. Of note, experience with digital health literacy and artificial intelligence would be an asset. The successful applicant will have excellent interpersonal and team-building skills, and a demonstrated leadership capacity including establishing research collaborations. A commitment to meaningful engagement of people and communities with lived and living expertise is essential for this role.

The successful candidate will also possess sound judgment, excellent organizational, communication (verbal/written) and strong analytical skills. The demonstrated ability to cultivate internal and external relationships and collaborate effectively with colleagues, decision makers and the scientific community is required. You must be able to work effectively within an interdisciplinary team. The capacity to work with individuals of diverse ethno-racial and cultural backgrounds is required. Bilingualism (English/French) and/or proficiency in a second language is considered an asset.
