Automotive Service Technician
About the role

As a Journeyman Mechanic with the City of Edmonton, you'll play a vital role in ensuring our diverse fleet stays in top condition. You'll tackle many repairs and maintenance tasks on everything from cars and motorcycles to snowmobiles and turf equipment – keeping our city services operating efficiently. We'll provide the training and technology you need to diagnose and solve mechanical challenges while you bring your expertise and dedication to this rewarding role. What will you do?
- Diagnose vehicle problems using diagnostic programs, recommend solutions, and perform necessary repairs
- Perform repairs and overhauls on various vehicle components, including engines, brakes, transmissions, differentials, axles, hydraulic controls, pumps, compressors, and electrical systems
- Provide field service support for equipment breakdowns at various City work sites
- Ensure adherence to all safety and environmental regulations
- Install and maintain vehicle-mounted equipment
- Inspect and test vehicles and equipment for defects, reporting any issues
- Inspect and follow up on work completed by other service staff to ensure quality and timeliness
- Perform mechanical brake inspections on private vehicles as requested by Edmonton Police Service
- Complete preventive maintenance checks, including brakes, lights, door, steering gear, and general motor condition
- Maintain accurate records and documentation, including work orders, inspection sheets, and time entries using the Fleet Management System (M5)
Repair and maintenance DOES NOT include tandem axle vehicles with air brakes or a combination of diesel engine and air brakes.
Qualifications:
- Completion of Grade 10 or equivalent
- Certified Alberta Journeyperson in the trade of Automotive Service Technician Certificate
Assets:
- Repair and overhaul experience in a designated light automotive trade
- Strong computer skills; proficiency in using Fleet Management System (M5) software
Skills required for success:
- Proficient in the trade and use of computer diagnostic equipment and software
- Commitment to safety; knowledge of the occupational hazards and safety precautions of the trade
- Excellent communication, problem-solving solving and interpersonal skills
- Ability to understand, communicate, read and write English at a level needed to meet job-related tasks and safety requirements

Conditions of Employment:
- Successful candidates will be fit for a respirator, and this position requires compliance with the City of Edmonton's Code of Practice for Respiratory Protective Equipment, including medical monitoring
- Compliance with the City of Edmonton's safety standards for Personal Protective Equipment (PPE), such as wearing steel-toed boots, is a requirement for this position
- Valid Alberta Class 5 driver's licence (or provincial equivalent) with minimal demerits
- Obtaining and maintaining a City Driver's permit is a requirement of this position
- Capable of passing a job-related physical abilities evaluation (F.A.R.E test) and a City medical examination
Work Environment:
- Conditions may include extreme temperatures (heat and cold)
- Exposure to dust, noise and diesel exhaust fumes
- Lifting up to 100 lbs
