Overview of role

WestJet is seeking for a backend Senior Full stack software developer reporting to our Accounts & Rewards Digital Delivery team. This individual can demonstrate a high standard of excellence, enjoys challenges, and is results driven. The incumbent must be highly motivated and demonstrate the ability to work in an agile environment. Follows the direction of leaders, practice leads and specialists to create high and maintain quality and secure software applications. Provides technical expertise and keen in creating high-quality software solutions by designing and developing mainly Java-based back-end software solutions but also highly experienced in frontend development. Applies industry-standard processes, practices, and techniques and work with the development team and business stakeholders to develop appropriate guest focused applications that meet WestJet’s business, technical, and quality requirements. As a seasoned professional, you are a natural coach and mentor who enjoys developing others. This role requires an energetic and motivated full stack developer with a strong work ethic and willingness to learn and contribute in a fast-paced environment. Excellent communication skills and the ability to collaborate with others are essential.

Key deliverables include

Design and develop robust, extensible, and high-quality code that meet business, technical and quality requirements of upcoming product features as well as the maintenance of existing functionalities Actively participate and provide technical expertise for the creation, implementation, and ongoing evolution of WestJet’s design and development methodologies, coding standards, and guidelines Play an active role in the evaluation and selection of new software development tools and frameworks as we constantly optimize and modernize Shares knowledge through by providing training via presentations/workshops that encourage development on the team Collaborate and engage with internal and external developers to ensure alignment of standards & best practices Plan, lead, and track the technical aspects of the software development sustainment streams and capital projects Help the development team in working with business stakeholders to define and prepare functional and design specifications of new features/products Provide accurate estimates for development effort, complexity, and risk for software development sustainment streams and capital projects Design and develop automated unit and integration tests for front end code that define and validate feature/product requirements Help the development team in working with quality assurance partners to assess the impact of code changes, to ensure the validation of requirements, and to provide timely troubleshooting and fixes to software defects Help the development team in working with operational partners to ensure the supportability of new features/products and to provide timely technical support and fixes to production applications Provide technical expertise in how to manage code and resolve code conflicts with other developers Document system components, related interfaces and ensure complete and accurate release notes Demonstrate sound judgment regarding confidential and sensitive matters Experience and qualifications: Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science or equivalent experience 10+ years of experience in all phases of software development Excellent interpersonal, organizational, problem-solving, verbal, and written communication skills Expert level experience in developing web applications using Java and Spring Framework (or related) Expert level experience in developing web applications using HTML, CSS and JavaScript; Highly experienced in developing frontend applications using of JavaScript libraries such as VueJS, React, Angular, NodeJS; Expertise in RESTful web services using AJAX, JSON Expertise in a version control system such as Subversion and GIT Expertise in IDE software such as IntelliJ, Eclipse, VSCode and the like Experience developing web applications using HTML, CSS, and JavaScript.

Experience with Azure, AWS, or Google Cloud is beneficial in this role

Knowledge of JavaScript unit testing frameworks such as Jest, Nock, Mocha, Jasmine Expertise in IDE software such as Webstorm and VSCode; Experience in development following accessibility standards and web usability (UI/UX design); Experience in mobile-first web development and responsive web design Knowledge of build automation tools such as Jenkins and Azure DevOps pipelines Practical understanding of iterative, agile development methods, processes, and techniques such as Scrum and Kanban Airline experience is an asset Mobile apps development experience is an asset Sabre Web Services experience is asset The benefits of being a WestJetter: WestJet provides all WestJetters with a competitive total rewards package.
