Job Profile Under the general direction of the Manager of Customer Engagement and Strategic Services, the Communications Coordinator provides strategic communications planning and support, including communication advice and expertise, to the Water and Waste Department (WWD). They are required to take a complete and integrated approach to communications through collaboration with the WWD management team and staff, with the various divisions of the Corporate Customer Service and Communications Department, and with other departments on cross-departmental issues.
This position’s responsibilities include the planning, design, coordination and implementation of traditional and digital communication strategies, the production of high-quality communication and marketing materials, the overall management of the Department’s websites (both internet and intranet), and supervision of staff.
The Communications Coordinator provides media relations expertise to the department, working closely with the Corporate Communications Division of the Customer Service and Communications Department. They are also responsible for ensuring adherence to corporate direction, guidelines and policies related to communication activities.
As The Communications Coordinator, Your Duties Will Include
- Develop and implement proactive comprehensive communication strategies in support of specific department services and programs.
- Develop communication strategies (including key messages) and coordinates communications for emerging and emergency issues, including liaising with the Corporate Communications Division.
- Oversee the implementation of departmental communication strategies and the development of departmental communication materials.
- Plan, organize and supervise the work of the department’s Communications Branch.
Your Education And Qualifications Include
- Bachelor’s Degree or Diploma in Communications, Public Relations, Political Studies or Journalism, or an equivalent combination of education and considerable experience in the field of public relations.
- A minimum four (4) years related work experience in communications, public relations and/or issues management.
- Experience developing and implementing strategic communications plans/programs.
- Experience in project management, change management, social media, marketing material development and media relations are considered assets.
- Knowledge of communications theory and best practices.
- Ability to communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing, including expertise in communicating technical information in plain language.
- Ability to research, critically analyze, and synthesize information.
- Organizational and project management skills, with demonstrated ability to be detail-oriented, strategic, proactive and flexible.
- Ability to manage, coordinate and prioritize workload and meet deadlines, in a fast-paced high-stress environment, with minimal direction.
- Ability to build consensus, generate common understanding, and create shared vision, in an environment of diverse stakeholders and interests.
- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships, and interact effectively with senior managers, staff across the department and the organization, and a variety of contacts outside the organization.
- Experience supervising staff and creating a positive and constructive environment.
- Ability to exercise discretion, diplomacy, and confidentiality.
- IMPORTANT: Applicants who have been educated outside of Canada must have education which is comparable to the minimum qualification in Canada.
