Your Opportunity:
Reporting into the Chair, the Department Manager provides leadership and effective management of financial, and HR matters for the Department of Earth Sciences. The Manager is responsible for the financial activity of the department, including operating budget, budget preparation, forecasting, spending, accounting, payroll, purchasing, reconciliation, oversees granting and research accounts activity and provide financial recommendations to the Chair.
The Department Manager is responsible for the administrative functioning of the department involving personnel, payroll, human resources and services/systems essential to the efficient operation of the department. The incumbent will be responsible for hiring, supervising and supporting professional development for administrative and casual staff.
The Manager oversees departmental operations and broad management initiatives and works with the Chair to develop departmental strategic plans in alignment with the goals of the Faculty and the University and ensures administrative practices are in compliance with University policies and guidelines.
Qualifications:
EDUCATION:
- University degree in business, economics, and/or financial management or an acceptable equivalent combination of education and experience.
EXPERIENCE:
- Minimum 5 years’ relevant and progressive experience in financial and administrative management.
- Experience building and developing effective administrative systems and processes.
- Experience working with and interpreting policies and procedures pertaining to budget, finance, human resources, academic administration or similar organizational procedures.
- Experience leading, supervising, and motivating staff members.
- Supervising staff in a unionized environment is an asset.
SKILLS:
- Advanced Computer Skills in MS Office (Excel, Outlook, Word)
- Demonstrated experience with FIS, and HRIS, databases or equivalent systems
- Excellent administrative, analytical, problem solving and financial skills with ability to interpret and apply information and provide financial analysis.
- Excellent interpersonal skills
OTHER:
- Demonstrated leadership and interpersonal skills including ability to guide and motivate staff and to develop cooperative, collegial working relationships
- Demonstrated sound judgment and decision-making,
- Ability to manage competing deadlines and a variety of activities with competing deadlines; excellent time management skills; strong organizational skills and attention to detail; demonstrated initiative
- Proven effectiveness in the development of administrative systems and processes, adaptable to changing priorities.
- Discretion and confidentiality in dealing with highly sensitive information.
