About the role
We are seeking a detail-oriented Agate Editor to join our editorial team. The Agate Editor is responsible for compiling, formatting, editing, and publishing agate content, including boxscores, standings, statistical summaries, schedules, results, and other data-driven elements that appear in print and digital editions. This role requires exceptional attention to detail, the ability to work under tight deadlines, and familiarity with sports statistics and data presentation.
Key Responsibilities
- Edit, format, and publish agate material including sports scores, standings, schedules, and statistics.
- Verify accuracy of data from wire services, team/league reports, and internal sources.
- Apply consistent style, formatting, and tagging conventions across all agate pages.
- Monitor breaking sports results and update agate packages in real time.
- Collaborate with designers, copy editors, and section editors to ensure agate content is integrated smoothly into daily layouts.
- Troubleshoot formatting or technical issues with automated feeds and wire content.
- Maintain knowledge of league structures, scoring conventions, and statistics across a wide range of sports.
- Uphold the newsroom’s standards of accuracy, timeliness, and style.
Qualifications
- Degree/Diploma in journalism.
- Strong editing and proofreading skills with exceptional attention to detail.
- Familiarity with CP and AP style and sports terminology.
- Ability to work quickly and accurately under deadline pressure.
- Experience with newsroom publishing systems, agate software, or statistical feeds is an asset.
- A passion for sports and a broad knowledge of professional, college, and amateur leagues.
- Willingness to work nights, weekends, and holidays as required by sports schedules.
Work Environment
- Fast-paced environment.
- Evening and weekend and holiday shifts are common.
