About the role

The Engineering Career Centre in the Schulich School of Engineering is currently seeking a Full-time Temporary Relief Specialist, Experiential Learning for approximately 7 months.

Reporting to the Senior Manager, Experiential & Work Integrated Learning, the Specialist will act independently, leveraging the staff team to meet high level experiential learning goals. The Specialist will coordinate the development and implementation of the Engineering Leadership Certificate, Engineering Entrepreneurship certificate, and professional development programming for Graduate students, and other initiatives related to experiential learning and student engagement.

The position operates on a regular work week schedule (Monday to Friday) equating to 35 hours per week, with some variances in start and end time. During peak periods, this position will regularly organize and attend events outside of normal working hours on a shifted schedule.

Summary of Key Responsibilities (job functions include but are not limited to):

Engineering Certificate Programming

  • Oversee the Certificate Programs activities, including registration management, scheduling, reviewing workshop content, and inviting speakers for three certificates, Engineering Leadership, Engineering Entrepreneurship, and Well being.
  • Coordinate all aspects of the Certificate in Engineering Leadership, including offering over 34 workshops throughout the academic year.
  • Set Leadership Program registration goals to increase participation annually.
  • Liaise with academic staff to support the content and delivery of embedded certificate content into first year engineering courses.
  • Track student attendance and progression to award certificates at the end of the academic year.
  • Organize an annual Engineering Leadership Conference for 300 engineering student leaders, liaising with industry partners to deliver relevant professional leadership workshops.
  • Build relationships with potential industry partners to deliver workshops to students.
  • Collaborate with our Marketing team to ensure the website and print materials are up to date.

Leadership

  • In collaboration with the Senior Manager and Associate Dean, monitor and report on external funding sources that support experiential learning.
  • Act as the faculty expert in Destiny One and D2L programming, keeping on top of any new features or updates and reporting back to staff stakeholders.
  • Develop targets for participates and assess the success of all experiential learning initiatives.
  • Report high level recommendations to manager and senior academic leadership based on program evaluations/data.
  • When needed, develop new experiential learning initiatives to align with strategic priorities.
  • Create opportunities for graduate students to learn core professional and leadership both through embedded coursework and co-curricular activities skills.
  • Keep appraised of trends and new initiatives in leadership and experiential learning, building relationships with colleagues in Canada and in professional organizations such as NICKEL.
  • As needed deliver presentations or develop materials for senior academic committees such as the Engineering Faculty Council, the Dean's Executive Committee, and the Engineering Career Centre Industry Advisory group.
  • Provide recommendations to streamline and effectively deliver programming within current staff resources.

Experiential Learning

  • Lead the development of orientation programming for all undergraduate and graduate students.
  • Work with Schulich Clubs, Teams, and Associations to provide leadership and team management training at key points.
  • Support the implementation of the Engineering Mentoring programs, including peer to peer and industry, including training, program development, industry engagement, communications, and events.
  • Attend and support events which may include, student group initiatives, leadership receptions, or award ceremonies.

Qualifications / Requirements:

  • Graduate degree and a minimum of 5 years of progression leadership experience within an education institution.
  • Proven ability to leverage staff resources to meet strategic goals.
  • 2 years of experience in coaching and mentoring staff.
  • Experienced in developing & facilitating student leadership workshops that incorporate student development or engineering leadership theories and pedagogies.
  • Knowledge and 3 or more years of experience with program and strategic event planning; leadership program experience required.
  • Proven expertise in university systems such as Destiny One and D2L.
  • Demonstrated experience coaching and supporting students.
  • Skilled at public speaking and engaging groups of students.
  • Knowledge of Engineering Education, experience working with engineers, and knowledge of APEGA competencies and CEAB graduate attributes.
  • 2 years of experience in project management, including setting timelines and implementation plans based on high level strategic goals.
  • Strong planning and organizational experience with a demonstrated ability to set priorities and develop timelines for project completion as well as effective decision making and problem solving ability. (5 years experience required)
  • Excellent interpersonal skills, and the ability effectively engage in interactions with others in a competent and professional manner.
  • Excellent oral and written skills; ability to draft clear, concise, and professional correspondence and create visually appealing presentations, learning guides, and promotional materials.
  • Ability to independently develop positive relationships with staff, students, industry and stakeholders across campus and external to the University.
  • Expert computer skills including Microsoft Office, Email applications, social media, and web-based systems.
  • Expected to frequently shift work schedule evenings and weekends to meet multiple demands and pressures to produce high-quality work.
