##Vactor/Heavy Equipment Operator
COMPETITION #26CU19
OYMENT TYPE: Regular FT
COMPENSATION: $37.50/hour (PG 8 CUPE 339)
DAYS: Monday to Friday
LOCATION: On-Site
HOURS: 7:00 AM - 3:15 PM
POSITION SUMMARY: Under the supervision of the Public Works & Parks or the Utility Operations Supervisors and the direction of the Lead Hands, the Heavy Equipment Operator helps to make the City of Nelson the number one Municipality in Canada, based on value for service by participating as a team member of the Operations Department. The Vactor Operator/HEO does this by ensuring our subsurface infrastructure is safely and effectively inspected, maintained, and renewed. This is done by safe and efficient operation of the Vactor Truck while flushing, vacuuming and performing hydro excavation duties.
ESSENTIAL QUALIFICATIONS:

Grade 12 or GED (General Equivalency Diploma) WHMIS

Valid Class 3 BC Driver’s License with air endorsement

Currently holds or is able to demonstrate proficiency as a ‘Level A or 1’ certification*on an Excavator, Loader and Backhoe

5 years experience as a heavy equipment operator OR an equivalent combination of education, training and experience
*An “A or 1” operator is one who performs skilled work and is able to work in high stress situations including high public traffic areas. Works around utilities, both above and below ground. These operators have scored a 91 – 100% on their evaluation.
SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

Physical ability to carry out the duties of the position

Ability to load, secure and transport equipment in a safe manner Ability to read and interpret plans and specification sketches

Ability to interact with other employees and the public in a tactful and courteous manner Ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing

Ability to operate all municipal powered equipment

Ability to work independently and organize and prioritize tasks throughout the day Familiarity with related municipal policies and operating procedures

Familiarity with City of Nelson/municipal and WorkSafeBC safety procedures
