Public Works Inspector
Temporary (Asset Management)
The City of Courtenay invites applications for a temporary full-time position of "Public Works Inspector” in the Asset Management Division of the Infrastructure and Environmental Engineering Department. This union position subject to the terms and conditions in the collective agreement between the City and CUPE Local 556.
The Public Works Inspector conducts inspections on civil infrastructure projects; Reviews construction plans and drawings, and conducts on-site inspections; Liaises and coordinates with professional consultants, and contractors; Investigates administrative and/or public inquiries.
The Successful Candidate Will Have:

Diploma of Civil Engineering Technology from a recognized educational institution, or equivalent training and experience.

Eligible for certification by ASTTBC (Applied Science Technologist & Technicians of BC) as a Certified Public Works Inspector Level 1 (CPWI) certificate OR able to acquire within an acceptable time.

Valid BC Class 5 Drivers License.

Eligible for membership in Applied Science Technologists and Technicians of BC.

Considerable (7 years) experience in civil/municipal infrastructure design and/or construction.

Thorough knowledge of civil engineering and construction methods and testing/inspecting methods relating to public works utilities and other related infrastructure.

Considerable knowledge of legislated civil construction codes and regulations.

Strong interpersonal, communication, and organizational skills.

Strong office computer skills, GIS and related software.
-
Ability to work well as a member of a team and independently.

Ability to deal with the public, contractors and engineers with tact, courtesy, and diplomacy.

Ability to interpret and apply City policies, procedures, engineering design standards and specifications, other legislated regulations, and civil engineering surveying data.

Ability to stand and walk frequently throughout the day; occasionally climb in and out of ditches, trenches, manholes and chambers, lift heavy objects, work in awkward positions, and frequently work in inclement weather.

ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS AFTER HIRING

Certified Public Works Inspector Level 2 (CPWI) certificate

First Aid Emergency Level - Industry and CPR Level A Certification; Traffic Control training; WHMIS Certification, and other job-related safety training
The current (2024) hourly wage rate is $40.33 based on a 40-hour work week (Schedule “B”).
