About The Opportunity We are seeking a highly skilled and detail-oriented Special Process Engineer to join our dynamic aerospace team. The ideal candidate will be a subject matter expert responsible for the development, qualification, certification, and continuous improvement of our special processes, including Heat Treatment, Plasma Spray, HVOF, and Brazing. This role is critical to ensuring our manufacturing processes meet the stringent requirements of the aerospace industry.

Location: Orillia, Ontario

This is an Onsite position.

Responsibilities

  • Process Development & Control:
  • Create, update, and maintain all special process procedures and work instructions to ensure compliance with customer, internal, and regulatory standards.
  • Prepare, review, and approve special process work instructions.
  • Develop and validate process parameters and recipes for new materials, parts, and specifications.
  • Lead the First Article Inspection (FAI) activities for parts processed through your special processes.
  • Quality Assurance & Compliance:
  • Manage and successfully host all NADCAP and customer audits for the assigned special processes.
  • Ensure all special process tests (e.g., coupon testing, coating adhesion, thickness, metallography) are performed on time and to specification.
  • Conduct Root Cause Analysis for non-conformances and develop robust corrective and preventive actions.
  • Develop and authorize detailed rework/repair procedures for processed components.
  • Maintain all necessary documentation and records to demonstrate process compliance and product traceability.
  • Project & Supplier Management:
  • Manage special process qualification projects for new specifications and new parts under existing specifications.
  • Work with suppliers and subcontractors to identify, correct, and prevent process-related issues.
  • Evaluate and technically approve new suppliers for special process services or consumables.
  • Manage capital expenditure projects for new equipment or major upgrades.
  • Equipment & Resource Management:
  • Arrange and track periodical calibrations of all special process equipment and instrumentation.
  • Provide technical support to maintenance teams for equipment troubleshooting and repair.
  • Create and maintain a qualified consumable list and manage the minimum stock levels for the special process area.
  • Develop and execute equipment qualification protocols after new installations or major maintenance.
  • Personnel & Continuous Improvement:
  • Manage the periodic qualification and re-certification of special process operators.
  • Train and certify other employees on process fundamentals, procedures, and best practices.
  • Implement continuous improvement action plans to enhance process efficiency, quality, and cost-effectiveness.
  • Stay current with industry advancements, new technologies, and evolving specifications in heat treat, coating, and brazing.

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Materials Science, Mechanical Engineering, Chemical Engineering, or a related field.
  • 3+ years of hands-on experience with aerospace special processes (Heat Treat, Plasma/HVOF Coating, and/or Brazing).
  • In-depth knowledge of NADCAP audit criteria and aerospace standards.
  • Proven experience with Root Cause Analysis and corrective action methodologies.
  • Strong understanding of metallurgy and material behavior.
  • Experience in creating and maintaining detailed process documentation.
  • Proficiency in reading blueprints and interpreting part specifications.
  • Ability to multitask and follow documented procedures accurately.
  • Strong mechanical aptitude and troubleshooting skills.

Preferred Qualifications

  • NADCAP audit experience.
  • Six Sigma Green Belt or Black Belt certification.
  • Experience with project management methodologies.
  • Experience in using microscopes, and other lab equipment for process verification.
  • Prior experience working in an aerospace or precision manufacturing setting.
  • Demonstrated ability to coach or train others in machine operation.

Physical Requirements

  • Regularly required to use hands to finger, handle, or feel.
  • Must be able to communicate verbally and possess the ability to hear.
  • Frequently required to stand, walk, reach with hands and arms, stoop, or crouch.
  • Occasionally required to sit.
  • Must be able to lift and carry up to 30 lbs.
  • Use of personal protective equipment (PPE) as required.
  • Specific vision abilities required include close vision for precision work.

Work Environment

  • Regular exposure to moving mechanical parts and cleaning solutions such as acetone and alcohol.
  • Noise level is typically moderate and consistent with a manufacturing environment.
