The Regulatory Coordinator is responsible for coordinating regulatory applications, approvals, and compliance activities for Canadian Natural’s oil sands operations, with a primary focus on Horizon and Albian. This role provides technical and regulatory support under Alberta’sEnvironmental Protection and Enhancement Act(EPEA), Water Act,Oil Sands Conservation Act(OSCA), and applicable federal legislation, ensuring ongoing compliance through effective application coordination, management plan development, commitment tracking, and regulatory reporting.
The position works closely with internal operational teams, environmental specialists, regulators, and external stakeholders to ensure regulatory obligations are met and maintained throughout the lifecycle of oil sands operations.
The successful candidate demonstrates strong knowledge of oil sands regulatory requirements, exceptional coordination and follow‑up skills, and the ability to manage multiple priorities in a fast‑paced environment. The role requires sound judgment, attention to detail, and discretion when handling regulatory submissions and sensitive information, along with the ability to collaborate effectively across multidisciplinary teams.

Key Accountabilities:
- Coordinate, prepare, and support regulatory applications and operational amendment applications related to mining, tailings, extraction, and upgrading activities
- Coordinate, update, and/or author environmental management plans required under EPEA, including (but not limited to): Dust Management, Noise Monitoring and Reporting, Mine Face Fugitive Monitoring, Mine Mobile Emissions, and other plans as required
- Coordinate and update plans or designs required under theWater Act
- Ensure regulatory submissions are complete and aligned with regulatory requirements and approval conditions
- Liaise between internal technical teams (mine planning, environment, operations) to support regulatory and environmental initiatives
- Track application timelines and support responses to Supplemental Information Requests from Regulators
- Manage and maintain regulatory commitment tracking, including preparation and submission of quarterly and annual regulatory reports
- Provide reporting support for annual environmental submissions for Horizon and Albian
- Maintain accurate regulatory records and support audits, reviews, and regulatory correspondence as required for Horizon
What You Bring to the Role:
- Typically, 5+ years of oil sands–related industry experience, supported by a degree in environmental science, engineering, or a related discipline
- Strong understanding of oil sands mining and upgrading operations, including mine and plant activities, utilities, water systems, and emissions monitoring
- Demonstrated experience with regulatory applications and approvals, including familiarity with the Alberta Energy Regulator (AER) processes (EPEA, Water Act and OSCA) and federal regulatory requirements
- Demonstrated ability to apply regulatory knowledge to support oil sands operations, including operational amendments, management plan implementation, and compliance with approval conditions
- Proven ability to verify, validate, and accurately manage large volumes of regulatory data, including submissions to provincial and federal government agencies
- Strong project coordination and organizational skills, with the ability to manage multiple priorities and timelines
