Role Description
This role will report to the Director, Business Controls. As an integral member of the team, the successful applicant will be responsible for working directly with management to expand and enhance the effectiveness and efficiency of the company’s operational and financial risk and control framework. We are looking for a candidate with financial acumen, demonstrated attention to detail and accuracy, confidence based on job-knowledge, a positive attitude, excellent time management and organization skills, with the ability to multitask and prioritize responsibilities to meet strict deadlines. Over time, you will become a subject matter expert on the company’s operations and support the design and implementation of key controls to mitigate risks.
The Business Controls team is responsible for working collaboratively with Finance, Internal/External Audit, IT and Operations to design new processes and controls for new business activities and continuously improve existing control framework, risk management and governance. This includes supporting unqualified opinions on QuadReal’s controls included in BCI’s System and Organization Controls Report (“SOC1”), financial reporting compliance, as well as the annual CEO/CFO certification to the QuadReal Audit Committee on the effectiveness of internal control over financial reporting.
Responsibilities
- Bring in depth knowledge in designing, implementing and monitoring internal controls (ICFR) in line with best practices.
- Partnering with first-line teams to assess risks, map processes, and design practical, auditable controls.
- Leading walkthroughs, control testing, and monitoring to ensure effectiveness and compliance.
- Managing control documentation and reporting on status, issues, and remediation progress.
- Collaborating with cross-functional teams to embed controls and promote awareness.
- Tracking implementation milestones and delivering progress updates to senior leadership.
- Ensure that an effective control framework is in place that will enable a clean audit opinion being received on the SOC 1 Report.
- Develop project plans to execute and deliver on special projects.
- Be the primary contact for the external auditors to align on methodology queries, testing concerns, roadblocks etc.
- Work with relevant business and IT owners to remediate, monitor and report on deficiencies, as applicable.
- Coach and develop junior team members to execute on assigned tasks
- Support the design, implementation and maintenance of financial reporting policies and standards to drive a stronger control environment.
Education and Qualifications:
- Professional auditing and/or accounting designation (CPA/CIA/CISA/CISSP).
- Degree in Business with a major in Accounting, Management Information Systems, or Degree in Computer Science.
- Mandatory 5 years+ experience in working with controls and risk concepts including SOC1/Sarbanes-Oxley requirements and knowledge of risk management frameworks such as COSO or in one or more of the following fields:
(i) external audit
(ii) internal audit
(iii) finance process and controls
(iv) finance risk management in accounting firm or industry.
- Experience of internal controls testing (internal controls over financial reporting) including IT general controls and IT application controls.
- Experience in designing and reviewing policies & procedures/ manuals for standardizing operations.
- Strong technical knowledge of accounting processes, technology risk and business control design.
- Experience of operational & financial audits, risk-based audit planning including identifying and evaluating key risks, performing risk assessment at entity and process level.
- Experience in project management and ability to plan and implement on multiple projects.
- Understanding of accounting process, systems, risk and controls, including IT general controls.
- Demonstrated ability to assess the design and operating effectiveness of policies, processes, procedures, standards, and reporting.
- Experience with Workiva and/or governance, risk and compliance (GRC) reporting tools is an asset.
- Experience with Yardi, SAP or other ERP systems is an asset.
- Experience in the real estate industry and/or financial services is an asset.
- Experience with analytical tools such as Power BI is an asset.
- Collaborative, proactive, detail-oriented and hard-working team player.
- Strong proficiency with PowerPoint to prepare presentation materials.
- Strong proficiency with Excel functions.
- Excellent oral and written communication skills.
- Ability to manage multiple assignments.
The expected annualized base salary range for this role is $105,000 - $115,000.
The actual salary offered will take into consideration a wide array of factors including, but not limited to, the individual’s skill, experience, education and training, the market compensation of the role, and the consideration to internal equity.
