The Department of Industry, Tourism and Investment (ITI) works through wide-ranging partnerships and initiatives to deliver quality programs and services that promote and support economic development, diversification and prosperity in the interest of Northwest Territories residents – their businesses and communities.

Job Information

Located in Yellowknife, and reporting to the Director of Tourism and Parks, the Manager, Research and Planning has a direct working relationship with Regional Managers of Tourism and Parks. The incumbent leads the Industry, Tourism and Investment regions in research and planning projects, provides advice and guidance on strategic planning. The incumbent ensures that Northwest Territories Tourism (NWTT) has the appropriate research and planning tools to guide its marketing investments to promote the overall image of the Northwest Territories in global markets as a highly desirable tourism destination.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES

  • Management skills to lead, plan, organize, coordinate and complete concurrent projects independently or with government/industry teams within time and resource constraints while monitoring progress and evaluating results.

  • Ability to achieve results within a complex regulatory and political setting.

  • Human resource management and supervision skills.

  • Knowledge of the territorial, national and international tourism industry.

  • Knowledge of and ability to use MS Operating Systems, MS Office, Internet and Email programs with a focus on presentation and statistical analysis software.

  • Knowledge of survey research design and advanced statistical analysis of survey results.

  • Knowledge of budgeting and financial analysis related to government operations.

  • Ability to identify, analyze, and articulate the pros and cons of various options aimed at increasing understanding, acceptance, and or resolution.

Typically, the above qualifications would be attained by:
A university degree in Tourism Management or a university degree in Commerce, Marketing or a related field with specialization in tourism research, and a minimum of 3 years experience in the tourism industry. Ideally, the incumbent would have a minimum of 2 years of private sector experience in one of the major tourism product areas.
Ability to speak and write in an Indigenous language and familiarity with the provisions of the Land Claim Agreements and NWT legislation would be assets.

Related fields would include a Degree in Statistics or Economics.

Equivalencies would be a diploma in Tourism Management and 5 years experience or Diploma in Commerce, Marketing or related field with 5 years experience.
