Your role at GEI.

GEI is seeking a motivated and technically strong Intermediate Geotechnical Engineer who is interested in working on a wide variety of projects involving geotechnical engineering, rock mechanics, and infrastructure development.

The successful candidate will support both traditional soil-based geotechnical projects and projects involving rock engineering, mining, and infrastructure in bedrock environments. This position offers an opportunity to collaborate with specialists within GEI and Terrane Geoscience while contributing to the growth of GEI’s mining and rock engineering service offerings both in Ontario and worldwide.

Essential Responsibilities & Duties

Responsibilities will include a combination of field investigations, technical analysis, reporting, and project coordination activities, including:

  • Planning and executing geotechnical and geological field investigations including drilling supervision, soil and rock logging, sampling, and in-situ testing.

  • Coordinating laboratory testing programs and reviewing geotechnical data for engineering interpretation.

  • Conducting engineering analyses related to foundations, earthworks, slope stability, rock mass characterization, and infrastructure design.

  • Supporting rock engineering and mining-related studies including rock slope assessments, structural geology interpretation, and rock mass classification.

  • Assisting with the preparation of technical reports, design memoranda, and engineering recommendations for infrastructure, transportation, and resource development projects.

  • Coordinating subcontractors including drilling contractors, laboratories, and survey teams.

  • Supporting instrumentation installation and monitoring programs where required.

  • Participating in field reviews and construction-phase services.

  • Collaborating with multidisciplinary teams including geotechnical, geological, structural, and environmental specialists.

  • Supporting proposal preparation and contributing to client relationship development and business development initiatives.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Geological Engineering, Geotechnical Engineering, Civil Engineering, or a related discipline.

  • 6–10 years of relevant geotechnical or geological engineering experience, preferably in consulting.

  • Licensed Professional Engineer (P.Eng.) in Ontario or eligible for licensure.

  • Strong understanding of geotechnical engineering principles including soil mechanics, rock mechanics, and subsurface investigation techniques.

  • Experience with geotechnical field programs including drilling supervision, soil and rock logging, and laboratory testing coordination.

  • Experience preparing geotechnical reports and technical documentation.

  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.

  • Ability to work both independently and collaboratively within multidisciplinary project teams.

  • Physical and environmental requirements for this position are available upon request.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience with rock engineering or structural geology projects.

  • Familiarity with rock mass classification systems and rock slope assessments.

  • Experience supporting infrastructure, mining, hydropower, or transportation projects.

  • Experience coordinating complex field investigations or multidisciplinary projects.
