About the role

Job Summary And Qualifications

  • The Cancer Genetics and High Risk Program from the Odette Cancer Centre at Sunnybrook is looking for a motivated genetic counselling assistant to work with genetic counsellors in a leading cancer centre. In our clinic we see patients who are referred for evaluation of their risk for breast cancer or hereditary cancer syndromes such as Hereditary Breast and Ovarian Cancer (HBOC).

The successful candidate will interact with patients, learn the day-to-day duties of a cancer genetic counsellor and assist in administrative and technical duties.

Job Responsibilities May include some or all of the following

  • Elicit, update and create patient pedigrees for genetic counsellors.
  • Prepare patient charts, collect relevant medical records for accurate assessment of a patient's family members, schedule appointments and perform essential administrative tasks.
  • Learn to use risk model software systems to accurately generate risk profiles for patients.
  • Observe genetic counselling sessions for hereditary cancer syndromes.
  • Participate in presenting journal club, taking meeting minutes, perform literature searches, etc.

Required Skills

  • Excellent communication skills and confidence to communicate with patients.
  • Excellent time management and prioritization skills with the ability to manage and follow-up on multiple tasks.
  • Detail-oriented with excellent organizational skills.
  • Interest in pursuing a career in human genetics considered an asset.
  • Completed or currently taking a course in genetics considered and asset.
