Role Overview:

Reporting to the Director, Marketing & Communications, the Associate Director, Internal Communications at Scouts Canada leads the development and delivery of strategic, segmented communications that help adult volunteers feel informed, supported, and connected to our mission.

By designing engaging, multi-channel campaigns—including emails, webinars, video, and events—tailored to audience needs and behaviours, the role strengthens volunteer satisfaction and alignment across the movement. The Associate Director is also responsible for auditing and streamlining internal communication channels, ensuring clarity, reducing overload, and upholding quality standards through governance and gatekeeping. With a strong focus on data-driven decision making, they define and track key performance indicators—such as engagement, sentiment, and behaviour change—to continuously improve impact.

Through collaboration with a high-performing team, partnership with volunteers, and support of colleagues in fundraising, retail, and property teams, this role ensures internal communications not only inform but inspire - helping volunteers thrive in their roles and contribute to delivering safe, high-quality Scouting experiences for young people.

Duties and Responsibilities:

Portfolio:

  • Internal Communications:

    Operationalize strategies to increase adult volunteer satisfaction with support from Scouts Canada, as a result of timely, segmented and effective internal communications.

  • Content: Design multi‑channel content campaigns (email, events, video, webinars) tailored for adult volunteers -optimized by audience, channel, timing and format.

  • Gatekeeping: Audit and streamline internal channels to reduce information overload and increase message trustworthiness and clarity, with authority to ensure colleagues comply with our approach to internal communications to volunteers and staff.

  • Analysis: Define and track KPIs such as message open rates, webinar attendance, survey scores and volunteer-reported behavior change, and continuously adjust our approach on that basis.

Leadership:

  • People: Continuously improve the performance of your staff, while ensuring a positive growth culture that results in increased satisfaction from high-performing staff, and swiftly addresses performance concerns.
  • Volunteers: Continuously improve partnerships between staff and National/Council level volunteers.
  • Committees and Governance: Form excellent relationships with members of any relevant committees, providing clear and concise, evidence-based advice and guidance.
  • Deputization: Deputize for your manager during absences.

Evidence, Insights and Reporting:

  • User Centered: Collect, analyze and share evidence related to perceived quality and impact of communications - tracking engagement, sentiment and behaviour change - to lead to more effective decision making and the prioritization of relevant user needs.
  • Project Management: Effectively and objectively report progress for all projects within the team against Scope, Timeline and Budget.

Finance and Revenue:

  • Budget: Effectively manage and report on <$1M team and project budgets.
  • Revenue: Collaborate with fundraising, retail and properties colleagues to ensure the scheduling of communications assets is supportive of increasing net revenue.

Qualifications and Job-Specific Competencies:

·       Post secondary degree or equivalent combination of education and work experience in marketing, communications, business or equivalent.

·       5+ years related experience in one of the following areas: internal communications, marketing, sales, brand trade/membership or trade union organizations.

·       2+ years leading teams with a focus on operational strategy and delivery in similar sectors.

  • Strategic Internal Communications: Expertise in multi-channel volunteer communications, audience segmentation, content planning and governance structures.
  • Data‑Driven Insights: Skilled in defining success metrics, analyzing communication performance and applying insights to strategy.
  • Change Management: Proficiency in designing communications to support volunteer behaviour change and alignment with national directives.
  • Technical Proficiency: Strong computer and technical skills and a growth-mindset when approaching new technology, including Proficient with Microsoft 365 / Office applications
  • Data Manipulation: Ability to interrogate data sets and visualize data to inform strategy, results and process improvements.
  • Program Management: Ability to manage multiple projects, identifying risks and taking accountability for status
  • Travel: Must hold a valid Canadian driver’s license or have equivalent ability to travel

Working Conditions:

·       Works remotely from home

·       Traditional working hours with some non-traditional working hours, including evenings and weekends, will be required

·       Some overnight travel required.

·       PRC (Police Record Check) and VSS (Vulnerable Sector Check) are required before the start date.

·       Mandatory training requirement.

Physical Demands:

  • Sitting at a computer for extended periods of time.
