Vice President, Aerospace and Defence R&D
About the role
Overview The VP, Aerospace & Defence R&D leads the engineering teams responsible for the successful development of the Aerospace & Defence (A&D) product line. This role works closely with other Autonomous Solutions Business Area teams to deliver the A&D product roadmap.
The following teams report into this role:
- Receiver Development
- AJ (Anti-Jam) Development
- IMU Development
- GRR Development
- Signal Processing
Beyond leading the development teams and delivering the A&D product roadmap, the VP of R&D also owns the A&D technology roadmap , including technologies developed internally and those acquired through mergers and acquisitions.
Location: Calgary, Canada (or other main site) Responsibilities The VP, Aerospace & Defence R&D responsibilities include:
- Execution of A&D Strategy and Operating Plan The VP contributes to developing the A&D strategy and is accountable for executing it across the R&D teams.
- A&D Research & Development This role owns and manages the A&D development process and full product lifecycle, ensuring compliance with the Hexagon Innovation Process (HIP). Responsibilities include identifying and developing key technical talent, leading the Technology Research team, transitioning research projects into development programs, and coordinating activities across all development teams.
- Technology Partnerships and M&A The VP manages technology partnerships, including build-versus-buy analyses. They are also responsible for technical evaluation and due diligence related to A&D mergers and acquisitions.
- People & Talent Leadership The role includes full R&D talent management, fostering strong employee engagement, and ensuring robust succession planning so that all leadership roles have effective successors identified.
- Operational Execution The VP works closely with the VP of Global Operations to align A&D development with manufacturing strategies.
Qualifications Must-have:
- 15+ years of progressive technology management experience. At least 5 years of experience in a senior leadership role.
- Technical Degree in positioning.
- Ability to travel domestically approximately 20% of the time.

- Strategic Vision: The ideal candidate should have a strong strategic mindset, capable of envisioning the future landscape of Assured PNT, grounded in a deep understanding of the current state of the art technology and market forces. They must be able to clearly articulate and communicate this vision for the A&D team’s growth.
- Organizational evolution: Demonstrated experience in leading organizational evolution is crucial. Should have a track record of successfully driving change, optimizing processes, and achieving business outcomes.
- Business Acumen: Strong business acumen is necessary to make informed decisions, conduct risk management and allocate resources effectively.
- Collaboration and Influence: Will work closely with cross-functional teams, stakeholders and external partners. Excellent communication, negotiation and relationship building skills are vital.
- Technical Depth: Deep understanding of positioning technologies, products and engineering processes.
- Results-oriented: The VP must be driven by results. Setting measurable goals, tracking progress, and adjusting strategies as needed is critical.
