As an Animal Health Technologist, On-Call, you are a paraprofessional working alongside the Shelter Veterinarian, and report directly to the Coordinator, Animal Care & Clinic Services. You will help provide the highest quality of medical and shelter care to the animals in the Animal Services facility. Primary duties include:
- Provide assistance or perform a wide variety of veterinary medical procedures including: radiology, nursing, anesthesia, pathology, euthanasia, surgery preparation, dentals, monitoring surgical recovery and emergency triage.
- Responsible for hospital maintenance, quality control and a variety of administrative duties.
- Conduct intake and discharge duties for No Cost clients, including answering questions, providing at home care instructions and documentation.
- Liaise with many professionals from the medical community such as board certified Veterinarians, Registered Animal Health Technologists, other enforcement agencies such as the Calgary Police Service and the Calgary Humane Society as well as the general public.
Qualifications
- A completed 2 year diploma in Animal Health Technology and at least 1 year of experience in a veterinary or animal health care environment.
- Must be a Registered Veterinary Technologist (RVT), and in good standing with the Alberta Veterinary Technologist Association (ABVTA).
- Must possess basic WHMIS certification.
- Experience with Microsoft Office (Word and Outlook) and customer service relations is preferred.
- Must possess strong communication skills and be able to work well in a team environment.
- Excellent organizational skills and flexibility in completing tasks are essential.
Working Conditions:
- Exposure to zoonotic disease, bio-hazardous waste, aggressive animals, bite wounds, scratches, needle sticks, toxic chemicals, extreme noise, noxious odours, radiation, animal bodily fluids, anesthetic gases, and verbal abuse.
- This position can be emotionally troubling as you will be required to perform and/or assist with euthanasia, disposal of animal remains and will be exposed to disturbing case files.
Pre-employment Requirements
- Successful applicants must provide proof of qualifications.
Pre-employment Drug Test: An offer of employment for this position will be conditional on an applicant passing a pre-employment drug test. This test assesses for use of drugs including cannabis. Failure to pass a pre-employment drug test may prevent an applicant from being hired into any safety sensitive position for a period of up to twelve months.
