Description Location: Ottawa (Supporting both the St. Laurent & Orleans Branches in the East end of Ottawa) Scope of Position The Mortgage Banker position offers a unique opportunity for a highly motivated and results driven individual. This role will be responsible for the residential mortgage business of a specific branch or group of branches assigned. Mortgage business will be sourced from members, branch and contact centre referrals as well as any lead list opportunities. This role will work closely with the Business Lead, as well as the Branch Manager(s) and staff assigned to this role, to meet monthly sales targets and annual sales goals. Act as a coach and SME on retail real estate lending to retail banking team members. The Mortgage Banker will be compensated by our total rewards program including a competitive base salary plus incentive compensation program.
Key Responsibilities Subject matter expert for retail real estate lending including more complex credit situations.
- Provide an exceptional member experience for all member interactions.
- Work with members for all their mortgage needs, including mortgages, s-loc’s and bridge loans.
- Meet the unique needs of each Member by providing sound credit recommendations and solutions at all levels of complexity, including offering appropriate creditor protection products.
- Meet with members to assist them in achieving their mortgage needs and actively refer to branch/partners to deepen the relationship.
- Advise and support member/clients in consolidating their financial assets at the credit union and refer business to appropriate team members as required.
- Resolve customer issues and administrative requirements (drafting documentation, reports, proposals, and correspondence
- Manage and close all mortgage, secured line of credit and bridge loans of multiple assigned branches including referrals from internal banking partners.
- Probe to identify member needs and opportunities and provide solutions or refer to appropriate team members to meet those needs.
- Acts as a subject matter expert and coach for staff as relates to real estate retail lending by providing branch mortgage support, education and training.
- Enhance the credit knowledge of branch partners to assist them in ensuring our member needs are fully met at all levels of complexity.
- Meet and exceed Alterna’s Operational Excellence standards.
- Keep up to date with the changes in mortgage regulation, new mortgage products, and the competitive landscape.
- Follow strict industry guidelines and rules and ensuring appropriate and compliant financial advice and documentation.
- Maintain a thorough knowledge and understanding of all Alterna’s products and services and their related features and benefits in order to deepen and enhance member relationships.
Responsible for overall Secured lending goals being met for assigned branches.
- Proactively build solid working partnerships with branch teams and support departments to facilitate the transition of new business.
- Develop and execute sales plans to meet and exceed sales goals and conduct regular pipeline management meetings with each branch manager in assigned branches.
- Ensure profitability of all transactions by appropriate application of rates (discretionary pricing, risk-based lending) fees and service charges.
- Leverage existing resources to actively contact members.
- Proactively solicit referrals from existing members to increase Alterna’s mortgage portfolio.
- Through proactive relationship management the Banker will retain and grow the mortgage credit book of the branches assigned
- Attend local business events to promote Alterna in the community.
Expectations / Outcomes
- Own and increase Alterna’s overall mortgage book of business as measured by new sales growth goals.
- Responsible to attain individual targets for sales and referrals as mutually agreed upon in the annual performance planning cycle, including the sale of CUMIS creditor insurance.
- Increase the visibility within the community of our mortgage offer and solutions as well as products and services offered through our retail branch network.
- Increase Alterna’s book of business through existing Members and referrals.
- Leveraging your skills in consultative sales, you will provide exceptional level of service and advice to new members introduced to Alterna Savings Credit Union
- Ensuring all credit transactions are documented, accurately, compliant and completed in a timely and professional manner, with a high level of integrity.
Qualifications Education / Certification / Experience
- Post-secondary education combined with 5 years in a similar role in a financial institution or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
- A minimum 7 years’ credit experience including the analysis, approving and/or recommending of credit.
- Extensive knowledge of processing/procedures of complex credit products including secured lines of credit, mortgages, and multi-unit residential mortgages (less than 6 doors)
- A minimum of 5 years of providing financial advice and demonstrated relationship building experience. Proven track record in sales and relationship building in meeting assigned goals and managing multiple tasks simultaneously.
- Valid Driver License and access to a vehicle to travel between assigned territory branches.
- Sound knowledge of various computer applications including Excel, Word etc.
- Proven knowledge of and experience practicing the governments regulatory requirements
- Credit Union experience a strong asset.
