The City is looking for senior and mid-level lawyers with expertise in corporate commercial and finance law practice areas. As a Lawyer with The City, you will have a significant degree of responsibility and autonomy within a team-oriented environment. Primary duties include:
- Provide timely legal services, drafting and advice in the following areas:
- Financial transactions, banking, borrowing and lending matters.
- Corporate and commercial law (including issues connected to organizational structure, municipal authority and delegation, corporate governance and subsidiary relationships).
- Direct investments (typically limited partnership unit subscriptions) and debt capital market issuances; and
- Draft commercial contracts in a wide variety of contexts, both with and without internally developed templates.
- Provide legal research and advice in the areas of corporate, commercial and finance law.
- Provide practical and strategic legal and business advice regarding the above within the context of a municipal corporation, as well as within the context of public law and policy.
- Work collaboratively with other members of Legal Services to ensure a consistent approach to matters.
- Provide responsive and effective client service to members of all Business Units across the Corporation.
- Work with new technology to achieve legal service business process efficiencies.
Qualifications
- A Juris Doctor (J.D.), Bachelor of Laws (LL.B) or equivalent degree from a recognized institution and active membership or eligibility for membership with The Law Society of Alberta.
- At least 5 to 15 years of experience in diverse commercial practice, including extensive experience in drafting a wide variety of commercial contracts.
- Experience in finance, commercial real estate, or municipal law will be considered an asset.
- You are detail oriented and can draft bespoke commercial contracts.
- You are a thoughtful, results-oriented lawyer who has demonstrated the ability to function effectively in technically challenging areas.
- You bring a strategic approach to the law, along with technical expertise and a commitment to initiating and inspiring creative problem solving.
- You contribute to a positive work environment and team atmosphere and have strong interpersonal and communication skills.
- You can manage competing interests and tight timelines and work effectively and productively with a variety of people both internal and external to The City.

Workstyle
- This position may be eligible to work from home for at least part of the time as one of several flexible work options available to City employees. Such arrangements are based on the operational requirements of the position and employee suitability and are subject to change based on operational needs and corporate direction.

Position Type: 3 Permanent
Compensation: Lawyer 2: $132,600 - 165,750 per annum (typically 5-8 year's experience)
Lawyer 3: $159,120 - 198,900 per annum (typically 8+ years' experience)
Hours of work: Standard 35 hour work week.
Days of work: This position works a 5-day work week with 1 day off in a 3 week cycle.
Location: 800 Mcleod Trail SE
