THE ROLE The Associate Director, Physical Education, Athletics and Wellness at the Royal Military College (RMC) in Kingston, doesn’t just oversee sports, fitness, physical education courses and recreation— they shape the future of well-rounded, capable officers for the Canadian Armed Forces (CAF).
As a strategist, motivator and change agent all in one, they are a catalyst for meaningful change. Whether it’s a new training regimen or a fresh approach to team morale, they challenge conventional approaches. They’re on the ground, inspiring Naval and Officer-Cadets to push their limits, build esprit de corps, and lead with moral character. At the same time, they work closely with CAF leadership to integrate athletics into the RMC degree program (academics, military training and education, and bilingualism).
Teamwork is paramount. Overseeing a large team, the Associate Director, Physical Education, Athletics and Wellness fosters mutual respect and trust, creating an environment where everyone thrives. Keeping the team sharp and up-to-date is crucial with active professional development, fostering a culture of growth. The Associate Director encourages open dialogue, where everyone shares their insights and learns from each other.
Ensuring delivery of university courses, managing varsity programs and keeping recreation clubs active, the Associate Director is the ultimate collaborator. Sitting down with experts from other institutions, sharing insights, providing guidance on University Boards and committees, the Associate Director is a respected member of the community.
Qualifications Needed Education, Certifications and Licenses Bachelor's degree in Physical Education, Exercise Sciences, Sports Administration or a related discipline AND several years of progressive management experience in a related field
Experience In planning, organizing, managing and controlling the operations of athletic departments and multi-business operations
In the administration of accredited academic programs, including curriculum design, quality assurance, academic governance, and regulatory compliance
In the application of exercise science and human performance principles to guide the direction of physical education programming and performance benchmarks
In student-athlete development, including recruitment, academic-athletic balance, leadership development, and progression tracking
In physical fitness, sports and recreation resources management
In applying policies, procedures, regulations and applicable legislation
In business and strategic planning
In project management
In budget administration and financial management
In leading and managing employees
In planning and conducting presentations
In developing, interpreting, editing and implementing policies and procedures
In analyzing and mitigating risk
