About The Role The Quality Engineer plays a critical role in developing, implementing, and maintaining Next Hydrogen’s Quality Management System (QMS) in alignment with ISO 9001:2015 and ISO 45001. This position supports supplier quality, internal and external audits, process quality, and continuous improvement initiatives across the organization.
This is a hands-on, cross-functional role that works closely with Engineering, Supply Chain, Operations, and Production to ensure products, processes, and systems meet internal, customer, and regulatory requirements. The Quality Engineer has the authority to initiate corrective actions, conduct audits, and contribute directly to supplier qualification and quality decisions.
Key Responsibilities
Quality Management System (QMS)
- Develop, implement, and maintain the Quality Management System in compliance with ISO 9001:2015 and ISO 45001.
- Create, update, control, and maintain QMS documentation, including procedures, work instructions, forms, and records.
- Plan, schedule, and conduct internal quality audits; document findings and verify corrective actions.
- Manage the Non-Conformance Report (NCR) system, ensuring timely containment, root cause analysis, corrective actions, and effectiveness verification.
- Establish and monitor QMS performance metrics, including defect rates, audit compliance, supplier performance, and CAPA cycle time.
- Lead continuous improvement initiatives using data analysis, trend identification, and systemic issue evaluation.
- Train employees on QMS processes, ISO requirements, audit outcomes, and procedural updates.
- Lead ISO 9001:2015 readiness activities and support ongoing certification and surveillance audits.
Supplier Quality
- Collaborate with Engineering and Supply Chain to qualify new suppliers through technical reviews, capability assessments, and quality audits.
- Maintain the Approved Supplier List (ASL) and complete annual supplier re-evaluations.
- Monitor supplier performance using KPIs such as PPM, on-time delivery, defect trends, and audit results.
- Lead supplier-related root cause investigations using tools such as 5-Why, Ishikawa, and FMEA.
- Manage supplier change points (material, design, or process changes) and ensure proper documentation and approvals.
- Coordinate quarantine, containment, rework, segregation, and supplier returns for non-conforming material.
- Support supplier development initiatives to meet quality and process capability expectations.
Incoming, In-Process, and Final Quality Control
- Manage incoming inspection processes, including sampling plans, measurement system requirements, and verification activities.
- Develop inspection criteria, first article inspection (FAI) plans, control plans, and acceptance standards.
- Conduct in-process inspections to verify conformance to specifications, work instructions, and engineering drawings.
- Support final inspections to ensure completed products meet customer, regulatory, and contractual requirements.
- Assist with inspection tools, gauges, calibration schedules, and measurement methodologies.
- Perform shop-floor process reviews to identify deviations and improvement opportunities.
Process Quality & Continuous Improvement
- Partner with cross-functional teams to improve product and process capability, reduce defects, and enhance manufacturability.
- Analyze quality data to identify root causes, systemic risks, and improvement opportunities.
- Support Lean and Six Sigma initiatives, including Kaizen events, waste reduction, and standard work improvements.
- Contribute to PFMEAs, control plans, and process validation activities.
- Participate in engineering change processes and ensure QMS documentation is updated accordingly.
Customer Quality
- Act as a liaison for customer quality concerns, including feedback, warranty claims, and field issues.
- Lead customer-facing investigations and prepare corrective action reports (e.g., 8D, 5-Why).
- Support customer audits through documentation, process walkthroughs, and corrective action follow-up.
- Verify that shipped products meet specifications, contracts, and regulatory requirements.
Compliance, Safety & Internal Support
- Ensure compliance with ISO 9001:2015 requirements, including document control, CAPA, and audit follow-up.
- Support ISO 45001:2018 compliance by integrating safety considerations into quality processes and documentation.
- Maintain awareness of regulatory and customer-specific standards, including ASME and TSSA where applicable.
- Provide training and coaching on quality tools, NCR workflows, inspections, and standard work.
- Mentor team members and support the development of a strong quality culture across the organization.
- Provide technical support during production issues, new product introductions, and process development.
Qualifications Education
- Bachelor’s degree in Quality Systems, Engineering, Operations Management, or a related field.
- Lean Manufacturing and/or Six Sigma training required.
- ASQ certification (Quality Inspector, Engineer, or Manager) or equivalent is an asset.
Experience
- 5–7 years of experience as a Quality Engineer or Quality Manager in a manufacturing or service environment.
- Direct experience working within ISO 9001:2015–certified environments, including internal audits.
- Strong background in supplier quality management, NCR processes, root cause analysis, and quality management systems.
- Experience supporting ISO 9001 and ISO 45001 compliance.
- Working knowledge of ASME and TSSA standards applicable to regulated mechanical or pressure equipment.
- Experience with EPICOR and ARENA systems is considered an asset.
Skills & Attributes
