Position Summary
The Registered Nurse in the Ross Memorial Mental Health Program will function as a member of the interdisciplinary team and as such, is involved with cases of a complex clinical nature and is responsible for: assessing and evaluating the biopsychosocial and emotional factors salient to assigned cases. As a Schedule One Facility the nurse is expected to function within an acute care setting (ED Crisis, PICU, Mental Health Inpatient, off ward units) to develop, implement, participate in evaluating the Clients treatment plan; provide crisis intervention; provide case follow-up and support clients in discharge planning; participate in team conferences; staff meetings and professional development activities; and performing other duties as required.
The Mental Health Inpatient Unit is currently seeking a Permanent Part-Time B Registered Nurse position to join their healthcare team.

Department/Unit/Program Description
The Mental Health Inpatient Unit is a Schedule 1 adult psychiatry short-term unit that provides assessment, stabilization and short-term treatment. The secured inpatient unit also features a dining room, group work areas and a private terrace for patients. A multidisciplinary team staffs the unit, providing nursing care as well as treatment and activity programs.
*** Ross Memorial Hospital qualifies for the Government of Canada's Student Loan Forgiveness Program. Nurses may be eligible to receive up to $30,000 in Canada Student Loan forgiveness ***
Essential Qualifications
- Current Certificate of Registration with the College of Nurses of Ontario, in good standing
- Non Violent Crisis Intervention Certificate or CPI training
- BCLS certificate, on hire
- Three (3) to five (5) years related psychiatric experience working with Seriously Mentally Ill individuals in an inpatient or outpatient setting
- Excellent and comprehensive biopsychosocial assessment skills
- Experience in Crisis Intervention techniques
- Excellent knowledge of psychopharmacologic treatment and protocols
- Excellent communication, interpersonal and team building skills
- Knowledge of community resources and referral protocols for consumers and family members an asset
- Skilled at verbal and non-verbal de-escalation techniques
- Knowledge of the consultation/liaison model of care delivery
- Experience with working with the seriously mentally ill population
- Knowledge of nursing theories
- Must be able to fulfill physical requirements of the job, as per current Physical Demands Analysis
Preferred Qualifications
- B.Sc.N.
- Excellent understanding of psychiatric nursing role in a hospital/community mental health care setting
- Expert understanding with relationship between psychiatric illness and emotional health
- Excellent interpersonal skills to be supportive to patients, families, colleagues and community health care professionals
- Excellent organizational skills to be able to cope with a demanding and every changing workload
- Sound knowledge of counseling skills
- Sound knowledge of pertinent Mental Health legislation and forms pertaining to psychiatric assessment/hospitalization as stipulated under the Mental Health Act
- Assessment skills including ability to conduct and evaluate a comprehensive bio-psychosocial history and mental status examination
- Assessment skills for conducting suicide risk
- Sound knowledge of acute psychopathology
- Sound knowledge of psychotropic medication
- Knowledge of solution based model
- Mastery of Crisis intervention theory and techniques/skills
- Short and long term problem solving skills
- Understanding of Patients Rights, Patient Advocate Office etc. as outline in the Mental Health legislation
- Demonstrated application of Bereavement theory and CISM
- Epic trained or ability to train and pass testing
Hours of Work
Must be available to work (12) hour shifts (days, and nights), Monday to Sunday, including statutory holidays. Shifts and hours may change according to patient/program requirements and as per the ONA Collective Agreement.
