About the role
Phoenix is building the future of healthcare access in Canada. From virtual consults to treatment delivery, we’re reshaping how patients connect with life-changing care. Backed by leading investors and scaling fast, we need smart, driven people who want to make an impact.
That’s where you come in. Phoenix is hiring its first In-House Legal Counsel. This is a rare opportunity to build the legal function from the ground up at a high-growth healthtech company. You’ll have a direct seat at the table with leadership, shaping how Phoenix approaches everything from contracts and partnerships to compliance with Canada’s complex healthcare, pharmacy, and privacy frameworks.
We’re looking for someone who thrives on both strategy and execution who can design scalable legal processes, guide critical decisions, and still roll up their sleeves to get deals done. If you want to be part of transforming healthcare in Canada and leave your mark on a company that’s changing the game, we’d love to hear from you.
What You’ll Be Doing
- Provide clear, practical legal advice across commercial, corporate, employment, privacy, and healthcare regulatory matters—always with a focus on Canadian law and compliance.
- Navigate healthcare-specific regulatory frameworks (including federal and provincial health laws, prescribing regulations, and telemedicine standards) to protect Phoenix and enable growth.
- Structure, draft, negotiate, and review financing, partnership, vendor, and patient-facing agreements
- Draft and maintain internal policies, codes, and compliance guidelines that align with Canadian healthcare and privacy requirements, including PIPEDA and applicable provincial legislation.
- Lead legal reviews and updates of patient disclosures, terms of service, and treatment agreements, ensuring they’re compliant, transparent, and patient-first.
- Provide the business with counsel on various legal and regulatory frameworks that apply to the marketing and sale of treatments
- Build scalable processes to streamline contract negotiation and operational workflows, without slowing down innovation.
- Conduct legal research and translate it into timely, concise, and actionable guidance for internal teams.
- Partner with and manage external counsel when specialized expertise is required.
- Advise on pharmacy legislation (e.g., provincial pharmacy acts, licensing, scope of practice rules, pharmacy operations) to ensure compliance in all jurisdictions where Phoenix operates.
- Advise on medical practice legislation (e.g., physician licensing, delegation, practice restrictions, advertising/solicitation rules) to ensure clinical models are compliant.
- Guide compliance with drug distribution and supply chain requirements in Canada, including Health Canada regulations under the Food and Drugs Act, Controlled Drugs and Substances Act, and provincial distributor/wholesaler frameworks.
- Counsel on pharmaceutical marketing and promotional activities, including compliance with federal law, provincial rules, and industry codes of conduct (e.g., Innovative Medicines Canada Code of Ethical Practices).
- Advise on pharmaceutical pricing and reimbursement frameworks, including the Patented Medicine Prices Review Board (PMPRB) guidelines, formulary listing processes, and provincial drug plan requirements.
Who We’re Looking For
- Bachelor’s Degree in Law (LL.B.) or Juris Doctor (J.D.), with 4+ years post-call experience.
- Experience either in a law firm or in-house experience, ideally in a regulated industry or start-up environment.
- Strong commercial skills and a true generalist mindset—comfortable negotiating everything from vendor contracts to NDAs.
- Proven ability to build legal procedures, SOPs, and scalable frameworks that create structure without slowing down the business.
- A collaborator at heart, capable of building strong relationships across teams and working with leadership directly.
- Pragmatic and proactive—you give advice that’s clear, actionable, and business-oriented.
- You’re passionate about improving the Canadian healthcare experience and have a personal connection to the space
Why work at Phoenix?
