Wet’suwet’en Ambassador

The Town of Smithers and the Office of the Wet’suwet’en have an exciting opportunity for a community- minded individual to serve as our Wet’suwet’en Ambassador. This is a full-time, exempt position.

About Smithers and the Wet’suwet’en Unceded Traditional Territory
Surrounded by mountain ranges, beautiful lakes, and rivers, Smithers is a northern gem, situated on the unceded traditional territory of the Wet’suwet’en Nation. The Wet’suwet’en people have held a strong cultural connection to and stewardship responsibility for these lands since time immemorial. Today, Smithers is home to approximately 5,400 residents and serves as a key service hub for the surrounding region comprised of approximately 15,000 people.

Residents enjoy four seasons of recreational activities; including a ski hill within half an hour of town, world-class fishing, backcountry and cross-country skiing, hunting, golfing and alpine trails for hiking and horseback riding, along with a lively music scene, boutique shopping, an art gallery and museum, an aquatic centre, and numerous family-friendly activities. Smithers is a true northern gem blending heritage with a welcoming, active community lifestyle.

About this opportunity
The Wet’suwet’en Ambassador is responsible for supporting and implementing opportunities for relationship building between the Office of the Wet’suwet’en and the Town of Smithers. This position will facilitate and coordinate partnerships and the implementation of joint projects between the Town of Smithers and the Office of the Wet’suwet’en. This role will also be firmly rooted in Wet’suwet’en culture and values and will operate in a manner that reflects Wet’suwet’en cultural integrity.

This position offers a competitive salary of $65,000 - $80,000 (commensurate with experience).

Qualifications Include:

  • Post secondary education in Indigenous Studies/Governance, Community Development, Social Sciences, Public Administration, or a related field of study.

  • At least 3 years experience in community development or program coordination.

  • Understanding of and commitment to Wet’suwet’en hereditary governance, cultural protocols, and decision-making processes.

  • Experience in a managerial/administration role in a government department, society, or organization, preferably in a First Nation environment.

  • An equivalent combination of education, training, and experience may be considered.

  • Preference will be given to Wet’suwet’en candidates.
