Department: Finance

Reports to: Manager, Finance Operations

Location: Hamilton, ON

Hours of Work: 37.5 hours / week

Start Date: TBD

The Accountant plays a key role in ensuring the integrity of financial information, maintaining timely and accurate records, supporting budgeting and reporting processes, and assisting with audit and compliance requirements. This position supports the Manager of Finance in delivering high-quality financial services and insights to internal and external stakeholders.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

Financial Operations

  • Prepare journal entries, account reconciliations, bank reconciliations, and monthly closing activities including accruals;
  • Maintain general ledger accounts, ensuring accuracy and completeness;
  • Support accounts payable, receivable, and payroll coordination functions;
  • Assist with preparation and submission of statutory filings and remittances;

Financial Reporting & Budgeting

  • Support monthly and quarterly financial reporting to leadership and funders;
  • Contribute to the development and monitoring of budgets and forecasts;
  • Assist with variance analysis and provide insights on financial performance;
  • Collaborate with department leads to track project and program financials;

Audit & Compliance

  • Prepare documentation and working papers for annual audits;
  • Ensure adherence to financial policies and internal control procedures;
  • Support preparation of government, grant, and donor financial reports;

Process Improvement & Systems

  • Recommend and support improvements to financial processes and systems;
  • Participate in finance system upgrades or implementation projects;

General

  • Ensures confidentiality, privacy of and integrity in handling sensitive data;
  • Understands emerging trends, leading practices, industry professional standards;
  • Nurtures and forms meaningful internal and external working relationships and partnerships;
  • Recommends changes to policies, processes, and systems as appropriate to improve and enhance service delivery;
  • Supports YWCA Hamilton mission, vision, and values;
  • Perform other duties as required.

WORKING CONDITIONS:

  • Standard 37.5-hour work week;
  • Occasional evening or weekend work may be required for audits or deadlines;
  • Hybrid work environment in accordance with YWCA Hamilton’s Hybrid Work Policy.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Accounting, Finance, or Business Administration or equivalent academic and/or work experience;
  • Working towards or recently attained a CPA designation;
  • Minimum 2–4 years of progressive accounting experience;
  • Proficient knowledge of GAAP and nonprofit accounting standards;
  • Strong skills with MS Office suite (Excel, Work, Outlook);
  • Experience with accounting software (e.g., Sage Intacct, QuickBooks, or similar);
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills;
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills;
  • Ability to handle sensitive information with discretion;
  • Experience in a unionized or nonprofit setting is considered an asset;
  • Must be able to lead and work from a feminist, anti-racist / anti-oppressive perspective for operations and strategic planning;
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills;
  • Must provide a current Criminal record Judicial Matters or willingness to obtain at own cost;
  • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision, and also work effectively in a team;
  • Bilingual English/French or other languages an asset.
