About the role

We are seeking an experienced and motivated Assistant Controller to join a growing finance team within a project-based professional services environment in North York. Reporting directly to the Controller, this role will play a key part in overseeing day-to-day accounting operations, supporting financial reporting, and leading a team of accounting professionals.

This position is ideal for a hands-on accounting leader who enjoys mentoring others, driving process improvements, and contributing to the strategic growth of an organization.

Salary: $95,000 - $120,000

Must Haves: Industry-Architecture, Engineering, and Construction. CPA Vantagepoint Key Responsibilities Support the Controller in overseeing the organization's accounting and financial operations. Lead, mentor, and develop members of the accounting team, fostering a collaborative and high-performing environment. Review and analyze financial statements, ensuring accuracy, completeness, and compliance with accounting standards. Oversee project accounting activities, including project financial reporting, billing review, revenue recognition, and related accounting functions. Assist with month-end, quarter-end, and year-end close processes, including journal entries, reconciliations, working papers, and financial analysis. Monitor financial performance and provide insights to support operational and strategic decision-making. Collaborate with project managers and business leaders to ensure accurate project financial reporting and profitability analysis. Maintain and strengthen internal controls, accounting policies, and financial procedures. Identify opportunities for process improvements and increased efficiencies across accounting and finance operations. Support ERP and financial system optimization initiatives. Prepare ad hoc reports, analyses, forecasts, and special projects as required. Ensure confidentiality of financial and organizational information. Qualifications CPA designation preferred; candidates actively pursuing their CPA or able to demonstrate equivalent experience will also be considered. Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, Business Administration, or a related field. Minimum 5 years of progressive accounting and finance experience. Strong understanding of financial reporting, month-end close processes, and accounting principles. Experience in project-based industries such as professional services, consulting, engineering, architecture, construction, or similar environments is considered an asset. Project accounting experience is strongly preferred. Experience with Deltek Vantagepoint, Deltek Vision, or similar ERP systems is considered an asset. Skills & Competencies Strong leadership and team management abilities. Excellent communication and interpersonal skills Self-motivated and able to work independently with minimal supervision. Demonstrated initiative and sound judgment. Strong analytical, problem-solving, and organizational skills. High level of accuracy, attention to detail, and accountability. Ability to manage multiple priorities and meet deadlines in a fast-paced environment. Advanced proficiency in Microsoft Excel and financial reporting tools. Professional discretion and commitment to maintaining confidentiality.
