The Accounting Manager at Stella-Jones will leads a team of accounting professionals supporting the timber procurement for its Western Canada operations. You will be responsible for full cycle accounting, financial reporting, woodlands accounting, and timber depletions as well as business support. You will also collaborate with procurement leaders to optimize a recently implemented software (WeighWiz, ScaleWiz and LIMS) with dynamic reporting and analysis.
Specific duties of the Accounting Manager include hands-on leadership to the accounting team to support complex journal entries, G/L duties, account reconciliations, financial analysis, cost standards and general business support. The role supports varied and complex pole procurement processes including Gatewood, timber sales, STI, trade wood programs as well as manufacturing support to eight peeling facilities in BC. The position reports to the Accounting Director with indirect reporting to Procurement department leaders.
This position will be an onsite based at our office in Salmon Arm with hybrid flexibility.
Responsibilities
Lead monthly, quarterly and annual financial close process
Prepare complex journal entries
Ensure accurate and complete reporting of standing timber, woodlands and silviculture calculations and depletions
Determine processes for complex purchasing agreements
Key contributor to supporting the timely execution of the financial close process
Provide insightful analysis to procurement managers for budgeting and forecasting expectations
Prepare and/or review account reconciliations
Maintain a framework of strong internal controls
Gatekeeper for the LIMS system and processes for respective region
Review weekly supplier payment reports in detail, noting discrepancies with contract rates and/or volumes
Assist with and provides supporting documentation for internal & external audits
Monitors and remediate system interface errors
Supervise, train and evaluate the accounting team
Organize accounting procedures, coordinate, evaluate and revise as needed to improve efficiency of workflow
Partner with management to prepare value added analysis and reports
Apply principles of accounting theory and use of judgment and other professional skills to determine the appropriate procedures for preparing and maintaining accounting records and reports
Perform other duties as assigned.
Qualifications:
Bachelor’s degree in accounting or related experience.
7+ or more years of progressive accounting experience
Experience with LIMS or similar accounting system
Timber or forestry experience is a strong asset
Strong Excel skills with an interest and aptitude for working with large amounts of data
