Job Summary

Under the direction of a journeyman Powerline Technician and the supervision of the Line Foreman, this pre-apprentice position will perform trade duties as assigned in a trainee capacity.
This is a temporary position. Successful Pre-Apprentice candidates will have the opportunity to apply on an internal competition to become a Powerline Technician Apprentice.

Duties & Responsibilities

  • Learns safe operation and inspections of equipment and vehicles (Bucket trucks, Digger-Derrick, Crane, Chipper, trailers, etc.).
  • Learns safe use and care of tools and materials (hand tools, power tools, and personal protective equipment).
  • Learns to select proper tools, material and equipment as required by the trades for project work. Assists trades with keeping trucks stocked with equipment and materials.
  • Assists with digging holes, erecting poles, setting transformers and pedestals and assembling and installing line material on underground and overhead systems.
  • Assists with stringing guy wires.
  • Assists with laying cables and stringing conductors.
  • Assists with dismantling material for salvage.
  • Supports and promotes the health and safety of employees and the general public in accordance with the Saskatchewan Employment Act, Saskatchewan Health Regulations and Standards, Occupational Health & Safety Regulations and the City of Saskatoon’s administrative Occupational Health & Safety policies and departmental procedures.
  • Maintains and monitors programs which affect public and employee health and safety.
  • Learns electrical fundamentals (motors, generators, transformers).
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.

Qualifications

Education, Training and Experience Requirements

  • Grade 12 education, including Physics 30 and one of the following:
    • Foundations of Mathematics 30
    • Workplace & Apprentice 30
    • Pre-Calculus 30
    • Classes equivalent to the former Math A30/Algebra 20 and C30/Trigonometry 30 will also be recognized

OR

  • Grade 12 education and successful completion of a Powerline Technician Preparation course, with ability to complete the above 30 level classes within one year of hire.

  • Possession of, or must attain, certification through employer provided training First Aid, CPR, WHMIS and confined space certificates.

  • Successful completion of Saskatoon Light & Power Pre-Apprenticeship Skills & Physical Assessment.

  • Possession of valid Class 5 Drivers Licence.

  • Current driver’s abstract from SGI demonstrating a safe driving record.

Knowledge, Abilities and Skills

  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships and deal courteously, and tactfully with the public.
  • Physical ability to perform the assigned duties outside under varying weather conditions.
  • Knowledge of safety practices, procedures, and policies.

Weekly Hours: 37.33

Salary Range: $27.66 CAD per hour (2023 rates)
