About Kwikwasut'inuxw Haxwa'mis First Nation
The Kwikwasut’inuxw Haxwa’mis First Nation (KHFN) are affiliated with the larger tribal grouping known as the Musgamagw Tsawataineuk Tribal Council. The traditional territory of the Kwikwasut’inuxw Haxwa’mis consists of pristine lands and waters, which encompassing one of the most resource rich areas in the province.
As a Nation, we are actively engaged politically, economically and on day-to-day issues. In carrying out these activities are continually mindful of the role of our traditional laws governing our territory, waters and traditional economy. About the Opportunity
KHFN is looking for a full-time Band Manager based in Alert Bay and Gilford Island, BC, in a hybrid capacity that includes both on-site presence in the community and remote work, with a mutually agreed rotational schedule.
Reporting directly to Chief and Council, the Band Manager is responsible for leading the day-to-day and strategic operations of the Nation, ensuring effective governance, program delivery, financial stewardship, and community-centered growth.
More specifically, your responsibilities include but are not limited to:
- Participating with Chief and Council in developing and advancing the Nation’s vision and strategic plan
- Advising Chief and Council on operational, financial, and governance matters while identifying risks and recommending solutions
- Developing and executing operational plans aligned with strategic priorities and community expectations
- Overseeing departmental operations including Finance, Maintenance, Human Resources, Education, Social Services, Health, Capital, and Housing
- Monitoring and evaluating programs and services to ensure quality, effectiveness, and alignment with community priorities
- Leading policy development and conducting annual reviews of policies and procedures
- Establishing and maintaining collaborative relationships with community members, government representatives, funders, and partner organizations
- Supporting human resources planning, recruitment, performance management, and staff development
- Securing and administering funding, including researching funding sources and supporting proposal development
- Providing regular financial and operational reports to Chief and Council, including updates on economic development initiatives
- Identifying and mitigating organizational risks to protect the Nation’s people, assets, finances, and reputation
About You
To qualify, you will need an undergraduate degree in Business or Public Administration, Finance, Human Resources, First Nations Governance, Social Sciences, or a related discipline (or an equivalent combination of education and experience). A minimum of 8 years of related experience, with 5 in a senior leadership role within a First Nations community or a similarly complex organization will also be essential.
Additionally, the following skills and background will be highly valued:
- Strong knowledge of First Nations governance, the Indian Act, and the Truth and Reconciliation Commission (TRC)
- Demonstrated experience managing complex operations including budgeting, financial oversight, HR, policy development, and reporting
- Knowledge of federal and provincial legislation including employment standards, human rights, occupational health and safety, taxation, and related regulatory frameworks
- Solid understanding of Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP) and financial management procedures
- Experience securing funding, writing proposals, and supporting fundraising initiatives
- Proven ability to build and maintain collaborative relationships with diverse stakeholders
