EPCOR is hiring a Specialist, Portfolio and Energy Analytics (Full-Time, Permanent) to join our team in either Edmonton or Calgary, Alberta. This role plays a key part in driving energy market price forecasting and portfolio risk analytics to support EPCOR’s Energy Management front office.
As a Specialist, you will be responsible for developing fundamental electricity and gas pricing curves, evaluating portfolio risk, and informing commodity pricing strategies. Your work will directly contribute to optimizing trading outcomes and shaping EPCOR’s energy strategy.
You’ll also build and maintain strong relationships with internal and external stakeholders including EPCOR leadership, customers, suppliers, and regulatory bodies to ensure alignment and effective collaboration.
This position may be eligible for EPCOR’s Where We Work hybrid program, depending on business needs and upon meeting eligibility requirements.
What you’d be responsible for
Reporting to the Senior Manager, Energy Analytics, your key accountabilities will include:
- Contributing to the Energy Analytics team’s strategic planning and execution, ensuring alignment with EPCOR Utilities Inc. (EUI) and Energy Management (EEM) goals.
- Building and implementing models to evaluate portfolio risk, profit/loss, and commodity pricing strategies.
- Contributing to the development of internal and external pricing curves and managing market intelligence vendors.
- Analyzing power market trends and dynamics to provide insights that inform and refine trading strategies.
- Identifying budget requirements for systems, resources, and analytical tools to support analytics delivery.
- Preparing and presenting insights, performance metrics, and strategic recommendations to senior leadership.
- Monitoring regulatory changes and participating in initiatives (e.g., AESO’s Restructured Energy Market), advocating for EPCOR’s strategic and commercial interests.
- Driving performance against key metrics such as trading targets, volumetric thresholds, and profit/loss outcomes.
- Ensuring timely and effective delivery of reports, system enhancements, and confirmations.
- Designing and maintaining analytics processes that meet compliance, regulatory, and risk mitigation standards.
- Ensuring cross-functional alignment and accountability to support optimal outcomes across Energy Management and broader EPCOR teams.
- Collaborating with internal stakeholders to support the implementation of analytics projects and ensure alignment with operational and strategic objectives.
- Staying current with market rules and protocols to ensure regulatory compliance and strategic readiness.
What’s required to be successful
The successful candidate will possess the following qualifications, experience and behaviours:
- Bachelor’s degree in Economics, Finance, Engineering, or a related field.
- Masters degree is considered an asset.
- Experience that includes:
- 10+ years of progressive experience in energy forecasting and portfolio****risk analysis, or other related analytical roles.
- 5+ years of direct experience in electricity, energy and/or utilities including pricing, forecasting, portfolio analytics, and regulatory e****ngagement.
- Deep understanding of energy markets, especially Electricity and Natural Gas; and supply and demand fundamentals.
- Demonstrated proficiency in deploying analytical tools (e.g. Python, SQL, etc.) to model portfolio risk and/or energy price forecasting.
- Experience with databases, data analytics platforms, Business Intelligence (BI) metrics dashboards and MS Office tools (Power Point, Excel & Word).
- Strong data analysis skills with the ability to translate complex data into actionable business insights and outcomes.
- Excellent communication and presentation skills, with the ability to tailor messaging to senior leaders, regulators, technical and non-technical teams or audience.
- Proven ability to work collaboratively across teams and influence outcomes in cross-functional settings.
- High attention to detail and the ability to manage multiple priorities in a dynamic and agile environment.
